The Work Of Thy Fingers
The Work Of Thy Fingers
When we’re in deep trouble — way over our heads — we can feel like God doesn’t care about us, or maybe doesn’t even know about us and our problems. We feel we need answers to our problems right now. But, we don’t know the answer — and the problem(s) just keeps gnawing at us.
As we mull in our misery, we can remember what King David wrote in Psalm 8:3-4,
When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers,
The moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained;
What is man, that Thou dost take thought of him?
And the son of man, that Thou dost care for him?
There are a lot bigger things in creation than us measly creatures — planets much bigger than the earth… stars many times bigger than our sun… the whole universe of orbiting systems… and nobody has a clue what else. In all of creation, we don’t seem to amount to anything. Job considered his insignificance in comparison to God’s almighty power, and said of God in Job 9:10,
Who does great things, unfathomable,
And wondrous works without number.
Nobody has the slightest clue about all of God’s “wondrous works”. What else can we call them? They range from huge conglomerations of unknown elements down to the tiniest atom. And we don’t understand how they all work together to balance all of creation.
And here we sit in our misery — a little bit of not much in a vast creation.
In spite of our insignificance, King David sings in Psalm 139:1-4,
O LORD, Thou hast searched me and known me.
Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up;
Thou dost understand my thought from afar,
Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And art intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O LORD, Thou dost know it all.
We don’t amount to anything, but God’s love searches our minds, movements, thoughts, and intentions. He pays such close attention to us, He knows what we’re going to say before we even say it. If God loves us so much, why doesn’t He give us what we want? He knows what we need. Proverbs 3:11-12 gently tells us,
My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,
Or loathe His reproof,
For whom the LORD loves He reproves,
Even as a father, the son in whom he delights.
We may appear to be insignificant in size, influence, and importance in all of creation, but we are most beloved, as God’s dear children. When the psalmist considered all of our troubled lives in this creation, he declared in Psalm 71:14-15,
But as for me, I will hope continually,
And will praise Thee yet more and more.
My mouth shall tell of Thy righteousness,
And of Thy salvation all day long;
For I do not know the sum of them.
We don’t know all that God has done for us. We can’t even count all that God continually does for us — “For I do not know the sum of them.” In our sorrows, we do know that God’s love is for real and,
We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28
God looks at us as significant, and has therefore redeemed us in Christ Jesus. So, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, thank You for Your constant care, even in all that we are unaware of. Thank You for leading us to eternal salvation.”
Love,
Margaret

Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
