Thy Testimonies Also Are My Delight
Thy Testimonies Also Are My Delight
We all have things that make us simply happy. We love these things and hold them dear. We like to think about the things we love, and find our joy in them. That is the way it was for the psalmist when he wrote Psalm 119:24,
Thy testimonies also are my delight;
They are my counselors.
The psalmist is referring to all of God’s word — the Bible. The Bible is a collection of God’s testimonies to teach us about the things of God. The psalmist takes great pleasure in learning from our Creator and Redeemer. So, he calls God’s word, “my delight”. That is where he finds pleasure, truth, and good counsel every time he wants guidance in living. He trusts God’s word because it is proven to be true and trustworthy.
There is so much in this world that is deceptive and untrustworthy. It’s awful to always have to be on guard about the truthfulness and trustworthiness of all sorts of things and people. That makes it all the more wonderful to have what is true, so we love it — we delight in it.
Even though we delight in God’s truths, there are many who do not. They actually hate the truth about their sins and their need for salvation. Their whole lives are spent in rebelling against God’s word and trying to tear it down. So, Solomon described them in Proverbs 2:14,
Who delight in doing evil,
And rejoice in the perversity of evil.
There are those who delight and rejoice in all sorts of evil. And, God’s children usually bear the brunt of their evil intents. In spite of all their evils in this world, we are told to rejoice. Philippians 4:4 tells us,
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
Rejoice when someone is being so mean and nasty? Yes. Our rejoicing is based on the truths of God Almighty. He alone is our Maker and Redeemer — He alone is in control of all things. We rejoice and delight in God’s word ( His testimonies ) because they are eternal truth and God alone is the final Judge of all things.
When we rejoice and delight in something, we love it. So, when we “Rejoice in the Lord”, we are loving God for His eternal truths and His love for us. When Paul describes what love is, he included the fact that love, “does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth.” ( 1 Corinthians 13:6 ) When we “Rejoice in the Lord”, we are loving God for all that He is. We are delighting in the truth that He is our Savior and King — and that He has proven those facts for us in all of Scripture, so that we don’t have to doubt or fear.
All that leads us to love, rejoice in, and delight in our Lord with thankful hearts. And, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, the testimonies of Your word are our delight. Thank You for drawing us to Your heart with Your eternal word.”
Love,
Margaret
