It Is Impossible for God to Lie

June 22, 2012

It Is Impossible  for God  to Lie

When the book of Hebrews  talks about  God’s promises  to us,  it notes  in Hebrews 6:18,

It is impossible  for God  to lie.

And then, we read  in John 1:16,

Grace and truth  were realized  through Jesus Christ.

One might ask,  “What truth  was realized  through Jesus Christ?”     The answer is spread  all throughout  the Old Testament,  where  many writers,  whose lives spanned thousands of years,  prophesied all sorts  of details  about the life,  suffering,  death,  and resurrection  of the Savior.     All those prophesies came true,  to the very smallest detail,  in the one Man,  Christ Jesus.     In that way,  “Grace and truth  were realized  through Jesus Christ.”

So,  we have truth  staring us  in the face  every time we open up our Bible.     It has proven itself  to be true over thousands of years,  with promises kept.     Okay.     So, it’s impossible  for God to lie  and all of His promises  of salvation  came true  in Jesus.     What should we realize  in all that truth?     We have something we can trust.     It feels good  to be able  to really trust.

One of the trusted truths  set before us is  that God loves us — really loves us.     That love  led Jesus  to pay for all our sins  on the cross.     That’s a truth.     That gives us  a joy and peace  that is so different  from other things  in this world.     There is a goodness  in this truth  that relieves us  from the burdens  and troubles  of this world.

What’s  so very good  about truth  is that  it can be proven.     History proves  the Bible  to be true.     So,  it is comforting  to read  in Psalm 119:160,

The sum  of Thy word  is truth.

There is  a contrast to truth.    That would be  all the lies  that plague this world.     When Jesus described  the destructive lies  of the devil  in John 8:44,  He said,

Whenever he speaks  a lie,  he speaks  from his own nature;  for he is a liar,  and the father  of lies.

That’s something  to think about  when  we consider the source  of all sorts of lies  that confront us daily.     Whether they be lies  being told  about the truths  in God’s word  and His salvation — lies told  in a courtroom — lies about an old car  one is trying to sell — or even a child’s lie  about getting into the cookie jar — lies come  from the evil  within us.

People get rather accustomed  to hearing lies.     Lies produce feelings  of suspicion,  fear,  hate,  anger,  doubts  about the unknown,  and that vague feeling  of distrust.     All those  who tell lies  will claim  they are telling the truth,  but they cannot prove  that they are  telling the truth.     There is  no positive evidence  of truth.     They even contradict themselves.

But,  God, our Creator and Redeemer,  has given us  a ton  of proof  for the truths  contained  in His word.     There we can find  good reason  to trust,  love,  and believe.     Resting  in God’s truths,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for being  our living proof  of real forgiveness  and love.”

Love,
Margaret
