I Will  Disclose Myself  to Him

A close friend  shows himself  to be a real friend.     Close friends  are good,  kind,  and loving towards each other.     They enjoy  each other’s company  because they share  the same values  and beliefs.     They do things  to be pleasing  because of their love  and care.

Honest  close friends  are never working  to be pleasing  to score  Brownie points.     It is only a genuine love  and sharing  of values  that leads them  in their desire  to be pleasing.     There’s a huge difference  between being  on a friendly basis  with people  in general — and being  in a close friendship,  sharing the same values  and beliefs.

All this  is what  Jesus  was referring to  when He said  in John 14:21,

He who has  My commandments  and keeps them,  he it is  who loves Me;  and he who loves Me  shall be loved  by My Father,  and I will love him,  and will disclose Myself  to him.

Jesus did not make up a long list of commandments.     Nor was He talking about the Old Testament commandments  for the Jews.     By  “commandments”,  Jesus meant  His teachings  on loving  and caring  for one another — forgiving and being forgiven — being justified  from all sins  through faith — and just believing  and trusting  in the love  of God our Savior.     Those are the “commandments”  we need  to be keeping,  in order  to be showing  our love  for our Lord Jesus.

Doing these  “commandments”  shows  that we want  to please Jesus,  because we share  the same values  and beliefs  of Jesus.     Finding joy  in obeying these  “commandments”  is simply  showing our love  for Jesus.     “We love,  because He first loved us.”   (1 John 4:19)     We are Jesus’  loving friend  because He showed us  so much love  in suffering  and dying  to pay  for all our sins.

To summarize:   Jesus loved us  and died to save us from our sins — we love Him  for His love and forgiveness — then Jesus loves us even more  for believing and trusting Him.     As Jesus loves us more,  He says  He  “will  disclose Myself  to him.”     In other words,  Jesus will help us  to know more deeply  and clearly  the greatness  of His love  as it has been shown  throughout history  and in His word  to us  in the Bible.

As we learn  from Jesus  by studying  His word  in the Bible,  we will come  to appreciate more and more  God’s faithfulness,  goodness,  righteousness,  and holiness.     We will see God’s love more clearly because  God teaches us  through His word — He “discloses” Himself  to us  in His word,  the Bible.

As Jesus  “discloses”  Himself  to us,  we grow  in faith,  hope,  and love — because we know Him  for who He is — our Lord God Almighty,  who loves and saves us.     As we are strengthened  in faith  with this knowledge,  we gladly live  to please  our Lord.

In the joy  of Jesus’  friendship,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for first loving us.”

Love,
Margaret
