The Elementary Principles of the World

The Elementary Principles  of the World

There are  “elementary principles”  regarding the conditions  of this world.     They are the basic ways  and causes  of all the things  we obviously  see happening  around us  every day.     There simply is  no denying  that there is an awful lot  of sin  going on  all around us,  and throughout this whole world.     We even  know that there is sin  in our own beings  —  whether we want to admit  to it  or not.

These  “elementary principles”  of the ways  of this world  show us  that sin hurts.     Lies hurt.     Stealing,  murder,  hatred,  sexual sins,  greediness,  slander,  power grabs,  and every other sin  hurts.     We know  they are bad,  but they are  the basic condition  of this world  and there is nothing  we can do  about it all.     People will  hatefully go on sinning  no matter what  we say  or do.

Just because  everyone else  is belligerently living  in sin,  is no reason  for God’s children  to allow themselves  to get suckered  into the same degradations.     Living according to this world’s  “elementary principles”  will bring on  eternal judgment  because it disregards  the truths  of God’s love  for us  in Christ Jesus.     When we know  God’s love  we should be letting  that love  lead us  to live according  to it  —  rather than according to  the evils  of this world.

There’s a huge difference between  good and evil.     And,  it boils down  to the matter  of life  or death.     That is why  Colossians 2:8 adamantly teaches us,

See to it  that no one  takes you captive  through philosophy  and empty deception,  according to  the tradition  of men,  according to  the elementary principles  of the world,  rather than  according to Christ.

It can be so easy  to become deceived  by the philosophies and deceptions  of this world.     They can sound  so good  and inviting,  because they match up  with our own sinful inclinations.     Our sinful natures  can fall  for anything.     That is why  we need  to take special care  that we  “see to it”  to check everything out  with God’s word  to us.     It is our responsibility  to be constantly  going  to God’s word  to let our Creator  and Redeemer  teach us  what is right  and good for us.

We’ll  be glad  we did.

As we come  to know  the joy  of living  “according  to Christ”,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  Your ways  are so good  and so right.     They bring a joy  the world  doesn’t know.”

Love,
Margaret

Not that I have already obtained it,  or have already  become perfect, but I press on  in order that  I may  lay hold  of that for which also  I was laid hold of  by Christ Jesus.
