Those  Who Call  Evil Good  and Good Evil

Sad to say,  but there are many  who hate  what is good,  so  they will boldly  call it evil.     Then,  when they see something evil,  with an arrogant smile,  they will claim  it is good.     People do this  in politics,  movies,  Christian doctrines,  education,  and every day life  in general.     It’s like they double-dare  anyone  to oppose them,  as they fight  to have  their evil way  and tear down everything  that is good,  righteous,  and true.     Loving evil  really is  a creepy thing,  as these defiant people  are condemning themselves  for all eternity.

This sort of defiance  has been around  since the beginning.     Isaiah 5:20-21 sternly warns,

Woe  to those  who call evil good,  and good evil;
Who substitute  darkness  for light  and light  for darkness;
Who substitute  bitter  for sweet,  and sweet  for bitter!
Woe  to those  who are wise  in their own eyes,
And clever  in their own sight!

No matter where  we live  in this world,  we can see  many different examples  of this sin.     God’s children  will be appalled  and grieve  about this awfulness.     In Isaiah 5:24,  Isaiah says  that these rebellious people,

… have rejected the law  of the LORD  of hosts,
And despised  the word  of the Holy One  of Israel.

Because  of their rebellion,  God’s judgment  will utterly destroy them  in the end.     But,  rather than pointing  the finger  at others,  we need  to keep  close tabs  on our own thoughts,  feelings,  and actions.     We might like  to imagine  that we cling  to what is good  and always reject  what is evil —  but we need  to get down  to the nitty-gritty  of all aspects  in our lives.

For example,  how many  will say  the Easter Bunny  is a good part  of the celebration  of Jesus’  resurrection day?     How many care  that the Easter Bunny  gets far more attention  than Jesus’ resurrection?     How many care  that the Easter Bunny  is a myth  and that Jesus’ resurrection means  that our sins  are forgiven,  and that we  are free  from the burdens  of our sins?     How many care  that getting treats  and new clothes  has become  much more important  than praising God?     How many care  that many  who celebrate  the Easter Bunny  know absolutely nothing  about Jesus?

There are those  who get angry  about any reference  to Christ’s resurrection.     They claim that “Easter”  is their celebration  of spring  and that there is no such thing  as Christ’s resurrection.     They call Jesus  a fake  and charlatan,  who should not ever  be celebrated.

But,  what is the truth?     Jesus’ life,  suffering,  death,  and resurrection  were all prophesied  hundreds and thousands of years  before they took place.     Isaiah  gives many details  about Jesus  740 years  before Jesus’ birth.     Everything came true  to the smallest detail.     So,  how should we feel  about Jesus?     How should we think  about such precise fulfillments  of prophecy?

Isn’t it  the Easter Bunny  who is the myth  —  fake  —  charlatan?     What should we  take joy in?

Rejoicing  in the truth,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  Your word  is eternal.”

Love,
Margaret
