To Whom Then Will You Liken Me?

To Whom Then Will You Liken Me?

In our closed minds,  people have conjured up  all sorts of  “images”  of what they imagine  God to be like.     There are all sorts of idols  and war-like mythical gods  in some people’s minds.     And there are cartoonists,  who represent the LORD God Almighty  as a silly old man, with a long beard, sitting on a throne.     Others imagine God to be a condemning judge,  who is very unjust and unfair.

With all their vain imaginations,  they do not think about all the intricately wondrous things God has made in all of creation.     They gloss over the power He has to create simply by His word — yes, simply by His word.     In reference to Old Testament verses,  2 Peter 3:5  says about mockers,

For when they maintain this,  it escapes their notice that  by the word  of God  the heavens existed long ago  and the earth  was formed  out of water  and by water, through which the world  at that time was destroyed,  being flooded with water.

And,  Hebrews 11:3  proclaims,

By faith  we understand  that the worlds were prepared  by the word of God,  so that  what is seen  was not made out of things which are visible.

Because people are so close-minded regarding the absolute, almighty power  of God  to create and destroy,  Isaiah speaks to them about  a number of the things  God has done,  and then quotes God’s response to the people  in  Isaiah 40:25,

To whom then will you liken Me
That I should be his equal?”  says the Holy One

After pointing out all sorts of fickle  wanderings of people’s vain imaginations,  God says to the people  in Isaiah 46:9,

Remember  the former things  long past,
For I am God,  and there is  no other;
I am God,  and there is no one  like Me.

No matter what we look at through all of history,  only the LORD God Almighty  has shown that He alone is God and that there is no other god of any sort.     There never has been any other real god and there never will be.     The LORD alone is from everlasting to everlasting.     He alone has no beginning and no ending.     Moses sang in  Psalm 90:2,

Even from everlasting to everlasting,  Thou art God.

In Numbers 23:19  we learn,

God is not a man,  that He should lie,
Nor a son of man,  that He should repent;
Has He said,  and will He not do it?
Or has He spoken,  and will He not make it good?

And then,  Samuel says in 1 Samuel 15:29,

The Glory of Israel  will not lie  or change  His mind;  for He is not a man  that He should change His mind.

So,  to what or whom should we liken God?     He cannot be in our vain and sinful imaginations.     But, we can know His love and forgiveness in our hearts and minds  when we learn to settle down  and listen to what He has to show us in His word — the Bible.     As Jesus teaches us in John 8:31-32,

If you abide  in My word,  then you are truly disciples  of Mine;  and you shall know the truth,  and the truth  shall make you free.

We cannot liken God to the things of this sinful world.     But,  His almighty power,  love,  mercy,  and forgiveness,  are revealed to us in His word.     As we draw close to God  in His word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Blessed be Your name,  Lord,  for all that you do  in bringing us to eternal salvation.”

Love,
Margaret
