Swear  to the LORD  and Yet Swear  by Milcom

Fears,  doubts,  and confusion  can lead people  to be two-faced — hypocrites.     It is a very concerned love  that will try  to set  these hypocrites straight,  because they definitely  are lost.     Their desire  for salvation  and God’s approval  cannot be met.     Our Lord Jesus  often addressed  the Jewish religious leaders  by saying,  “Woe to you,  hypocrites!”     And, He just as well  can say that  to many today,  who wish  to think  of themselves  as Christians,  but don’t have a clue  about what it means  to be a Christian.

The problems  of fears,  doubts,  confusion,  and hypocrisy  go way back  in history.     During the time  of the prophet Zephaniah,  around 640 B.C.,  the people  of Judah  were being hypocritical.     They would worship  the LORD  in the Temple — and also worship  the Ammonite god,  Milcom.     Worshiping that idol included sacrificing  their infants.     So,  Zephaniah 1:5  tells about,

And those  who bow down  and swear  to the LORD  and yet swear  by Milcom,
And those  who have turned back  from following  the LORD,
And those who have  not sought  the LORD  or inquired  of Him.

God  threatened  to destroy  all those people,  if they refused  to straighten out.     We cannot imagine  that we will get away  with  piously attending  a Christian church  and taking part  in the idolatrous practices  of today.     God Almighty  already knows  our every devious thought  and way — our every fear,  doubt,  and confusion.     Our pretentions  are not equal  to faith,  hope,  and love.

Today  people are mixing  the customs  of heathen religions  with their so-called christianity — and imagining  that they are covering  all the bases  of being a “spiritual”  person.     What they are actually doing  is bringing down  God’s judgment.     We cannot mix any  of the world’s ideas  with God’s word,  and imagine  we are pleasing  in God’s sight.

There are more things  in this world  that try  to twist  God’s word,  than we can possibly list.     Just a brief list  could include:   accepting  eastern meditation techniques —  chanting — being politically correct  by saying homosexuality  is acceptable  in God’s sight —   okaying abortion — and even by embracing Santa Claus,  Halloween, and the Easter Bunny.     Those “traditions”  totally disregard  all that God  has done  for us  in Christ Jesus — and yet,  nobody thinks much  of it.      None  of those traditions  show  any honor  or respect  for God’s love  and salvation.

Yet,  people imagine  that they are honoring  and respecting God  in that whole list  of worldly things.     It all shows  that we desperately need  to open up  God’s word — the Bible — and start learning  the truth  about God  and what is acceptable  in His sight.     If we refuse  to do that,  we will remain  fearful hypocrites  and never know the truth  that can  set us free.

As we realize  God’s faithful patience  with our wayward ways,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  open up  our hearts  and minds  as we study  Your word  to us,  that we may know You  in the right way.”

Love,
Margaret

Not that I have already obtained it,  or have already  become perfect, but I press on  in order that  I may  lay hold  of that for which also  I was laid hold of  by Christ Jesus.
