Let Him Who Boasts Boast of This
Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet because his heart was so broken over the gross sins of Israel. Jeremiah quoted the LORD as saying,
Jeremiah 9:3
“Lies and not truth prevail in the land;
For they proceed from evil to evil,
And they do not know Me,” declares the LORD.Jeremiah 9:5-6
‘They have taught their tongue to speak lies;
They weary themselves committing iniquity.
Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit;
Through deceit they refuse to know Me,” declares the LORD.Jeremiah 9:23-24
“Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.
The people of Israel felt they were safe because they followed the religious traditions of their forefathers. But, those traditions of keeping the sabbaths and being circumcised meant absolutely nothing in God’s eyes, because the hearts of the people were not with God, their Creator and Redeemer. Instead, the people were treacherous liars, slanderers, cheaters, idolaters, and every other epitome of evil.
Jeremiah wept because of their stubborn evil and their coming judgment from God. But, the people despised Jeremiah and felt they were wise, mighty in their ways, and rich because of their superiority. That is why the LORD told them to not boast because of the things in their imaginations. God would soon enough be wiping out all that they were so boastful of.
Jeremiah is the one who had his priorities set straight. If Jeremiah were of the boastful type, he could have boasted “that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth.” Jeremiah did not boast about his understanding and knowledge of God — instead, he wept because the people “through deceit” refused to know the LORD for all the wonderful things He is.
With all that goes on in this world today, people need to understand and know the LORD for who He is. He is the One who “exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth.” We need to see and understand God’s love for each of us — along with His impending judgment of those who “through deceit refuse to know” Him. Let us not love the deceitful lies of the world. With Jeremiah, let us understand and know the wondrous love of God and His salvation through faith in Christ Jesus alone.
Then, resting in God’s love, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, it is so good to know that You alone are the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”
Love, Margaret

Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
