Why Are You in Despair?

Why Are You in Despair?
There are all sorts of reasons why people fall into despair. With a seemingly unending problem — or problems — that go from bad to worse, it just seems like there isn’t any reason to hope any more. People might wonder about the reality of God and the Bible’s proclamation of love and forgiveness. In feeling so alone, people become depressed.
When a psalmist felt depressed with his overwhelming problems, he wrote in Psalm 43:5,
Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why are you disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.
This psalmist asked himself the right question — “Why are you in despair, O my soul?” In other words, “Get a grip on the reality of God Almighty and how He surely will carry us through all of our trials and tribulations.” We don’t have a clue as to how or when God will set things straight and give us the victory, but He will do it when the time is right according to His wisdom and love.
That is why the psalmist firmly tells himself, “Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him.” When God sets things right, we will surely be praising Him with a heartfelt praise. And that day is sure to come because God Almighty is holy, just, righteous, good, merciful, and most loving.
We need to give ourselves a firm “talking to” whenever we fall into depression. All of God’s word proves that He can be trusted to keep all of His promises. That is why it is important for us to firmly ask ourselves, “Why are you in despair, O my soul?” Take a good, hard look at the truth. We simply don’t have a good reason to despair, because God is our victory in the end.
1 Corinthians 15:57
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.1 John 5:4
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith.
Because our eternal victory in Christ Jesus is assured, we can rejoice with love and peace in our hearts.
Philippians 4:4
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!1 Peter 4:13
But to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing; so that also at the revelation of His glory, you may rejoice with exultation.
We need to remember that God is with us in all of our sufferings. We are never really alone because Jesus promised in Matthew 28:20,
Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Remembering Christ’s sacrificial love for us, and His gifts of total forgiveness and eternal life, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord Jesus, thank You for enabling us to endure our earthly trials. May our whole lives be to Your glory.”
Love,
Margaret

Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
