That  We Should  Be Called Children  of God

1 John 3:1
See  how great  a love  the Father  has bestowed  upon us,  that we should  be called children  of God;  and such we are.     For this reason  the world  does not know us,  because it did not know Him.

The apostle John  wants every Christian  to always  be aware  of God’s  immense love  for all  who put their trust  in Him.     No matter  how old we may be  God considers all those  who believe  in Him  to be His dearly beloved children.     So,  John says  we are  “called children  of God”  because that is exactly what we are.     John explains this in John 1:12-13,

But  as many  as received Him,  to them  He gave the right  to become  children  of God,  even to those  who believe  in His name,  who were born not  of blood,  nor  of the will  of the flesh,  nor  of the will  of man,  but of God.

Those  who believe God’s word  are born of God’s Spirit,  as Jesus said to Nicodemus  in John 3:6,

That which is born  of the flesh  is flesh;  and that which  is born  of the Spirit  is spirit.

When we believe God,  we have  “received Him”.     That’s when we are born  “of God”  —  “of the Spirit” —because God then comes  and lives  in our hearts  and minds.     And,  that’s when the world  cannot figure us out.     Having faith  in God  does not make sense  to them.     Because they reject God  and their need for forgiveness,  they mock  the concept  of having faith — “For this reason  the world  does not know us,  because it did not  know Him.”

But,  the child  of God  knows in his heart  and mind  the love  and reality  of God Almighty.     We might not  be able  to explain  all that we know,  but we know it  as a child  of God.     In knowing God,  we love God  for who He is  and all that He does.     That is why  we agree  with Paul  in Ephesians 5:1-2,

Therefore  be imitators  of God,  as beloved children;  and walk  in love,  just as Christ  also loved you…

We never want  to be like the unbelievers  in this world  because we know and love  the wondrous freedom  of God’s love  that we have  in Christ Jesus.     It’s as Jesus told us  in John 8:31-32,

If you abide  in My word,  then you are  truly disciples  of Mine;  and you shall know the truth,  and the truth  shall make you free.

We have been freed  from our sins  and we want to stay free  in Christ Jesus.     We love  the loving ways  of our Creator,  Sustainer,  and Redeemer.     And so,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  being a child  of God  is worth  far more  than anything  in the world.     Thank You  for making us  Your very own.”

Love,
Margaret
