As the Horse  Or  As the Mule

King David wrote  about his sin,  and how trying  to hide his sin  drained his whole being.     So,  he pleaded with everyone  to be sure  to pray  to the LORD  for the forgiveness  we all need.     With his plea,  David tells us  to be sure  to go to God  while He can still  “be found”.     (Psalm 32:6)

In other words,  there can very well come  a time  when we’ve allowed  our hearts  to become  so hardened  into our sins  that we bitterly  don’t even want  forgiveness  from God  or His help  in getting out  from under  the clutches  of our sins.     We can get  to the point  of hating God,  denying Him,  and being unable  to utter  a prayer  for help.

Then  David’s  Psalm 32:9  counsels us,

Do not be  as the horse  or  as the mule  which have no understanding,
Whose trappings  include bit  and bridle  to hold them  in check,
Otherwise  they will not come near  to you.

Horses  and mules  cannot reason  with the same kind  of intelligence  as a human being.     They need  a special kind  of training  with plenty  of treats  and patient coaxing.     And,  even with that,  they need  a bit  and bridle  to constantly  direct them  in the right direction.

Because humans  are supposed  to be more intelligent  and use  our God-given  common sense,  we are   to always remember  to go  to our LORD  for direction  in our lives   and instruction  in godly living.     When we’ve heard  God’s word,  we are  to knowledgeably trust  our Creator  and Redeemer,  and gladly  do His will — without being told repeatedly  the difference  between right  and wrong — or needing  some sort  of discipline  to straighten us out.

When we reasonably  and sensibly  acknowledge  the righteous ways  of our Redeemer,  we  will have a gladness  and rejoicing  in our hearts  that will lead us  in a peace  and trust  of God’s love.     Then,  we will say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for patiently leading us  in the paths  of righteousness  for Your name’s sake.”

Love,
Margaret
