They  Remove Their Hearts  Far From Me

For whatever reason,  some people imagine  that God  only knows  what they say  out loud.     They think  they can hide  their true feelings  from God  by just not saying anything.     So,  they will take part  in church activities,  worship services,  Bible studies,  and church celebrations,  but their heart  is not in it.     Deep down  they feel God is a drag  and they don’t like the idea  of being considered a sinner  in need  of salvation  through faith  in Christ Jesus.     They just want  to rebel  against everything  that honors God  —  but,  they feel they had better  just tow-the-line  so they can work their way  into heaven.

The LORD  is well aware  of their loveless hearts,  so He said  in Isaiah 29:13,

Because  this people  draw near  with their words
And honor Me  with their lip service,
But  they remove their hearts  far from Me,
And their reverence  for Me consists  of tradition  learned by rote,
Therefore behold,  I will  once again  deal marvelously
        with this people,  wondrously marvelous;
And the wisdom  of their wise men  shall perish,
And the discernment  of their discerning men  shall be concealed.

When the hearts  of the people  are cold  towards the LORD,  and they simply  go through the motions  of appearing religious,  God knows  how to deal  with them.     God has always  proven Himself faithful  to His people  —  uncommonly  faithful,  loving,  understanding,  patient,  and true.     But the people become faithless  towards God.     The people are the ones who  remove their hearts far  from the LORD.

When they harden  their hearts  towards the LORD  and all  of His ways,  they lose their  “wisdom”  and “discernment”.     They are so into  their own selfish desires  and sinful ways  that they are unable  to think  or reason wisely.     In other words,  they have thrown God’s wisdom  out the window,  so they have nothing left.     They are rebelliously floundering  through this life  and cannot figure out why  they feel so troubled  about everything  and feisty.

When Jesus spoke about these people,  He said  in Mark 7:6-8,

Rightly  did Isaiah prophesy  of you hypocrites,  as it is written,

This people honors Me  with their lips,
But their heart is far away  from Me.
But in vain do they worship Me,
Teaching  as doctrines  the precepts  of men.

Neglecting the commandment  of God  you hold  to the tradition  of men.

People  who pretend  to worship God,  while they are just loving man-made traditions  are called  “hypocrites”  by our Lord.     Jesus presented some of the man-made traditions  the Jews held to  in that day.     But, today  Christians have  other man-made traditions  that they love more  than the worship  of God  our Savior.     What man-made traditions  might God  object to?

When we  should be giving  all honor  and glory  to Jesus’ resurrection,  people are preferring  the traditions  of the Easter Bunny,  egg hunts,  Easter Bunny stories,  and decorations with duckies,  chicks,  baby rabbits,  and the like.     So, where is the heart really?

Let God  make us wise  in His eternal truths.     Then with a real,  lasting joy,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  Your perfect love  is  beautiful.”

Love,
Margaret
