Proclamation  to the Spirits  Now in Prison

All was  not quiet  on that Jewish  Sabbath day  as Jesus’  dead body lay  in the tomb.     Jesus’ followers were  in hiding  for fear  of the Jewish leaders.     The Jewish  religious leaders  were celebrating  one of the holiest Sabbath days  on their religious calendar  —  Israel’s escape  from slavery  in Egypt,  which had taken place  around 1446 B.C.

But,  1 Peter 3:18-20  tells  of something  far more glorious.     Peter wrote,

For Christ  also died  for sins  once  for all,  the just  for the unjust,  in order that  He might bring us  to God,  having been put  to death  in the flesh,  but made alive  in the spirit,  in which also  He went  and  made proclamation  to the spirits now  in prison,  who once were disobedient…….

As Jesus’  dead body lay  in that tomb,  His spirit went  into hell  to victoriously preach  to all the “disobedient”  unbelievers,  who had mocked  the very idea  of the LORD God  having control  over anything  in their lives.     Besides murderers,  thieves,  and the like,  there were unbelievers  like the rich man,  who let poor Lazarus starve  to death  at his gate.     Hell also  is the place  for all the false preachers  —  and those religious leaders  to whom Jesus preached,  “Woe”,  in the gospels  —  specifically,  Matthew chapter 23  and Luke chapter 11.     Jesus warned them  of the consequences  of their arrogant unbelief.     Hopefully,  some took Jesus’ warning  to heart.     We know  many  did not.

To make a “proclamation”  is to make an official announcement  —  to show the facts  with authority  —  to preach.     In other words,  Jesus officially  proved His victory  over death,  the devil,  and absolutely  every sort  of evil.     He has victory  over all things  as LORD  and God  over all.     Hell  was not a place  of suffering  for Jesus.

Jesus’ preaching  in hell  was a part  of the punishment  of everyone  in hell.     As all those unbelievers saw  and heard  Jesus’ victory  for themselves,  they could only condemn themselves further  for all their rebellious unbelief.     They had foolishly  deprived themselves  of the blessings  of God’s goodness  and faithfulness  during their life time  on earth.     It was forever  too late  for them  —  and that  was sheer agony.

But,  it’s not  forever  too late  for those still living on earth.     We’ve been told  about Jesus’  victorious  “proclamation”  to those  in hell.     And,  we’ve been told  about the many  witnesses  who saw Jesus alive  in His body  after His resurrection.     Seeing  and feeling Jesus  in the flesh  after His resurrection  is what led  so many  to spread  the good news  of our salvation  through faith  in Christ.     They knew  the facts  so surely  that many willingly suffered  and died  for what they knew.

When Peter wrote  the above passage,  he knew exactly  what he was talking about.     He was just one  who witnessed Jesus  in the flesh  after His resurrection  and learned more  about fulfilled  Old Testament prophecies  —  straight from Jesus.

We read  New Testament  testimonies,  and say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for verifying  Your truths.”

Love,
Margaret
