Apart  From Me  You Can Do Nothing

In John 15:5,  Jesus told His followers,

Apart from Me  you can do nothing.

Some people  will proudly take offense  at that statement,  mocking it,  but it’s the truth.     Christ Jesus  is God in the flesh,  come down  to save us  from our sins.     He created us.     He keeps us alive  from day to day.     And,  He is our only hope  for life  in heaven, where we can live  with our Creator and Redeemer  in peace  —  eternally.

Nobody  can save themselves.     And,  since God even provides  the air  for us  to breathe,  everybody’s existence  depends  on God  every moment  of every day.     But,  with our one-track minds,  we’re usually thinking  of becoming successful,  rich,  and important  in this life.     We’re so self-centered.     We tend  to forget  about needing God’s redemption  and daily provisions  like air.     Even this necessity  is included  in Paul’s statement in 2 Corinthians 3:5,

Not  that we are adequate  in ourselves  to consider anything  as coming  from ourselves,  but our adequacy  is from God.

Paul wanted  to emphasize that  so much  that he also wrote  regarding true Christians  in Philippians 3:3,  that we,

Put  no confidence  in the flesh.

We can’t afford  to trust  in the strength,  intelligence,  or wisdom  of men  —  including ourselves.     Daily life  is a scary example  of mankind’s  many failings.     But,  King David knew how  to depend  upon God.     He sang  in Psalm 108:13,

Through God  we shall do valiantly;
And it is He  who will tread down  our adversaries.

God is so faithful  to us  as we look  to Him  for our guidance,  protection,  and every daily need.     The only way  anyone can honestly  make it successfully  through this life is  through God.     God alone gives us life  here on earth  and eternally  in heaven.     If we desire  eternal life  with our Creator  and Redeemer,  we must let Him  supply our needs  for salvation  and fruitfulness  in this life.     It’s all  as Jesus said  in John 15:5,

I am the vine,  you are the branches;  he who abides  in Me,  and I in him,  he bears much fruit.

Since God  is the only one  who can supply us  with life-giving  support,  we can  put our whole faith  in Him  and in our dependance upon God,  we can say  with Paul  in Philippians 4:13,

I can do all things  through Him  who strengthens me.

God is our strength  for daily living.     Looking  to our Creator and Redeemer,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for leading  and sustaining us  from day to day.”

Love,
Margaret
