Can Man  Make gods  for Himself?

When the prophet Jeremiah  was so disturbed  by the rampant sins  and idolatry  in Israel,  he lamented  to the LORD  in Jeremiah 16:20,

Can man  make gods  for himself?
Yet  they are not  gods!

As we look  around us today,  the question still is,  “Can man  make gods  for himself?”     The answer  is shameful.     Yes,  people make  all sorts  of so-called “gods”  for themselves.     But  as Jeremiah looked  at all the idols  around,  he had  to exclaim,  “Yet  they are not  gods!”

How true.     Those hunks of metal,  wood,  and stone were  nothing but elements  of the LORD God Almighty’s creation.     As an element  in creation,  they were totally incapable  of speaking,  moving,  answering prayers,  or anything else.     Bottom line:  they are not  gods!”     They were nothing but figments  of man’s imagination  and rebellion  against the LORD.

People today  might smugly say,  “Well,  we’re not idol worshipers.”     Wanna bet?     Absolutely anything  that a person loves more  than he loves  the LORD,  our Savior,   is an idol  —  a god.     Some people love  another person  much more  than they love God.     That person  has become  their “god”.     People can be  ever so creative  in the things  they choose  to love more  than God Almighty.

People will choose  all sorts  of “gods”  that are helpless  —  and will lead them  to total ruin  in the end.     Their “gods” have included riches,  fame,  power,  health,  movie stars,  singers,  education,  philosophies,  religious rites,   and even little trinkets  they’ve attached themselves to.     People even choose to love their ability  to embezzle from others,  their ability  to hide their lies,  their following  of a cult,  and their ability  to supposedly  defy the living God  in this lifetime.      So-called modern,  educated people  might shake their heads  regarding people  who worshiped an idol  of stone,  but  we are not one iota different  in our choice  of an idol.

Actually,  we are much worse  in our idolatry  —  we are much more guilty  and contemptible.     Why?

We have  God’s word  in our hands.     We have  the proof  that all  of God’s words  in the Old Testament  regarding the Savior  were fulfilled  in Christ Jesus.     We should  know better  than to trust  in the nothings  of this world.     But,  we’ve been  dumb enough  to forsake  the one-and-only Creator  and Redeemer  —  trading in truth  for despicable lies.

We commit two evils.     We forsake  the one and only  true God  —  and we love lies  of every sort.

The “gods”  of this world  will ruin us  eternally.     We need  to wake up  and knock off  all the worthless things  of this world.     Then,  facing the truth  of our being  with the deepest respect  for the LORD,  who made us,  we need  to ask  for His forgiveness  and help  to sincerely live  in His eternal truths.     We don’t know  when our last day  on earth  will be.

Remembering God’s love  and almighty power,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for your eternal truths.”

Love,
Margaret
