Lead Me on Level Ground

Lead Me  on Level Ground

How well we know  that steep,  slippery, rocky places  make for slow,  careful walking.     Such places  can be dangerous  —  and we might not even  reach our goal safely.     We might be praying  for God’s help  when the going  gets really rough.     After going through rough places,  it is such a relief  to be able  to walk  on “level ground”,  where our footing  and safety are sure.

All  of life  has the same rough places  where we go through  overwhelming troubles  and dangerous temptations.     When we need  to be kept safe  from the dangers  in this world,  we need  to pray  as King David prayed  in Psalm 143:10-11,

Teach me  to do Your will,
For You are  my God;
Let Your  good Spirit  lead me  on level ground.
For the sake  of Your name,  O LORD,  revive me.
In Your righteousness  bring my soul out  of trouble.

Whatever sort  of trouble  we might have  navigating  through this life,  our Savior  is our very best  safety net.     If we don’t know  God’s ways  for living,  our sins  will drag us  deeper and deeper  into ungodly living  —  and eventually lead  to our eternal destruction.     So,  with all  our heart,  we need  to be praying,  “Teach me  to do Your will,  for You are  my God.”     Realizing  and accepting  the LORD  as our  one-and-only God  and Savior,  we open up our hearts  and minds  to truly learn  God’s ways  —  always honoring God  as our Creator  and Redeemer.     That is the first step  in getting  to  “level ground”,  where we’ll have safety.

If we never want  to do God’s will,  and never honestly  accept Him  as God  in our hearts,  we’ll always  be crawling  over dangerous ground  and getting  more burdened  with sins.     That’s not smart  or good for us.

So, we need  to fervently pray,  “Let Your good Spirit  lead me  on level ground.”     Here  we are admitting  that we cannot make it  through life  without God’s constant help.     If God’s  “good Spirit”  does not get us  on the right track,  we’re  doomed.

We cannot pray,  “Help me  because I’m really  pretty good  —  at least  I try  to be good.”     It has nothing  to do  with how hard  we claim  to try.     We’re so unworthy,  we stink.     We can only  totally depend  on God’s holiness  and righteousness.     That’s why we pray,  “For the sake  of Your name,  O LORD,  revive me.     In Your righteousness  bring my soul out  of trouble.”

We want God  to fulfill  His promises  of love  and forgiveness  to us.     Only then  will we be  “on level ground”.     Living  according to  God’s saving love  is the  “level ground”.

The good part  is that our LORD promises  to lead us  “on level ground”  every time  we have the common sense  to turn  to Him  in faith,  hope,  and love.

In the joys  of having God lead us  “on level ground”,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  it is so wonderful  to live  in peace  with You.”

Love,
Margaret
