To Walk  in Their Own  Devices

The LORD God,  our Savior,  is ever so patient  with us,  as He well knows  our every weakness  and our every trouble.     But,  in all our weaknesses  and troubles,  He expects us  to live  by faith  —  trusting His every word  and His  every way  of being.     That is not  too much  to ask  because He is  with us every step  of the way,  strengthening us  moment by moment.

That’s how it was  when God rescued the Israelites  from slavery  in Egypt.     He did mind-boggling miracles  in the process  of the rescue  —  and all during their travels  through the desert.     God was with Israel  every step  of the way.     In spite  of all the wonders  the Israelites witnessed  firsthand,  they still  did not obey  the LORD’s  commands.     They grumbled,  complained,  and did all sorts  of evils.     So,  in Psalm 81:11-16,  the LORD says,

But  My people  did not listen  to My voice;
And Israel  did not  obey Me.
So  I gave them over  to the stubbornness  of their heart,
To walk  in their own devices.
Oh that My people  would listen  to Me,
That Israel  would walk  in My ways!
I would quickly  subdue  their enemies,
And turn  My hand  against their adversaries.
Those who hate  the LORD  would pretend obedience  to Him;
And their time  of punishment  would be forever.
But I would feed you  with the finest  of the wheat;
And with honey  from the rock  I would satisfy you.

Our stubborn  disobedience  has consequences  —  just as the stubborn disobedience  of Israel’s enemies  had eternal consequences.

It’s a disastrous  punishment  when God gives us up  to wallow  in our sins  and suffer  their consequences  —  “So  I gave them over  to the stubbornness  of their heart,  to walk  in their own devices.”     People imagine  that they love  and enjoy  their sins  —  and that they can get away  with their rebellious behaviors.     But, every sin  leads  to consequences.

God doesn’t want us  to have to suffer consequences,  but we stubbornly choose  to live  in our sinful ways  —  our  “own devices”.     Each individual chooses their  “own devices”.     So,  we will end up suffering  various consequences.     We know  how God wants us  to live  in faith,  hope,  and love.     We are well aware  of how God wants  to lead us  in His paths  of righteousness.

So,  what’s our problem?     It’s the pride  of wanting  to see  how much  we can get away with  before suffering  the consequences.     But,  what does God say  about those  who act  like enemies?     “Those  who hate the LORD  would pretend obedience  to Him;  and their time  of punishment  would be forever.”

Even within the camp  of the Israelites,  there were those  who were  “adversaries”  —  always trying  to stir up others  into disobedience.     They had no love  or respect  for the LORD.     It’s the same today.     Whatever  our setting,  there are adversaries  stirring up disobedience.

Let us listen  to our LORD and Savior,  so we may eternally  sing  for joy  in His presence,  saying,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  it is good  to hear  Your ways  of love.”

Love,
Margaret
