He Led Captive  a Host  of Captives

Sometimes  a person feels  like they’re caught  between a rock  and a hard place  —  chained  to their circumstances  —  unable  to change anything.     All  of those things  may very well  be true.     We are chained  to our sinful natures  —-  unable  to free ourselves.     If  we are not freed  by someone more powerful  than our captor  —  by someone  who has love  and compassion  for us  —  we will be  eternally doomed.

Christ Jesus is that someone  who has love  and compassion  for us.     Ephesians 4:8  quotes Psalm 68:18  and says  about Christ,

When He ascended  on high,
He led captive  a host  of captives,
And  He gave gifts  to men.

When Jesus  “ascended  on high”,  He was victorious  over sin,  death,  and the devil.     And  that is when  “He led captive  a host  of captives.”     We  had all  been “captive”   to our various sins.     Our sins   ruled over us  and had our spirits  beaten down  with its dominion  over us.     We felt like there was  no other way  to get through life,  except  to live defeated  and captive forever  in our sins.

Everyone  is a  “captive”  of sin  —  desperately needing  to be freed  from the sins  that bind them.     When Jesus arose victorious  from the grave,  He rescued those  who wanted  to escape  their captivity  to sin.     So,  we were  “a host  of captives”  and Jesus’  love captivated  our hearts  to follow Him  into the freedom  of God’s forgiveness.     Jesus  “led”  us  away  from our captivity  of sinful living.

God’s word  tells us  about the ways  that we become captive  to the sins  of this world.     Colossians 2:8 warns,

See to it  that no one  takes you captive  though philosophy  and empty deception,  according  to the tradition  of men,  according  to the elementary principles  of the world,  rather than  according to Christ.

These sorts  of captivities  are rather sneaky  and captivate  a lot of people.     Usually  they don’t even realize  they are “captives”.      Then  when the apostle Paul tells  how God’s preachers  need to be,  he says  in 2 Timothy 2:25-26  that preachers  should be,

…….correcting those  who are  in opposition,  if perhaps God  may grant them  repentance leading  to the knowledge  of the truth,  and they may come  to their senses  and escape  from the snare  of the devil,  having been held captive  by him  to do his will.

We need  to realize  that we are  the devil’s  captive  when we live  like heathen  —  without a close fellowship  with God.     We are  in great need  of  “the knowledge  of the truth”  and the “escape  from the snare  of the devil”.     That can come only  by turning  to Christ Jesus  for help  and abiding  in “the knowledge  of the truth”.      As we receive  God’s  “truth”,  God can lead us  to  “repentance”,  which leads  to forgiveness  and freedom.

The  “gift”  of forgiveness  frees the  “captives” and gives  eternal life.     In the joy  of following Christ’s lead,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  let us ever follow You  and glorify  Your saving love.”

Love,
Margaret
