The LORD God  Is a Sun  and Shield

We often describe people  and things  by comparing them  to something else  —  like, “She’s a peach  of a gal.”     That gal  isn’t really  a literal peach.     She is just sweet  and enjoyable,  like a peach.

God’s word  also makes comparisons  to describe  different things  —  even to describe  our LORD.     Psalm 84  describes God’s attributes  with a comparison.     Psalm 84:10-11 says,

For a day  in Your courts  is better than a thousand outside.
I would rather stand  at the threshold  of the house  of my God,
Than dwell  in the tents  of wickedness.
For the LORD God  is a sun  and shield;
The LORD  gives grace  and glory.

God Almighty is called  “a sun  and shield”.     That is a very appropriate description  because it is only God  who can  truly give us  “grace  and glory”.     God’s love lights up  our days  of troubles,  weaknesses,  and challenges.     When God’s  sunny truths  brighten up our days  with His promises,  help,  and strength,  He is giving us  “grace”  to help us endure  one day at a time.     It is a glorious thing  how the strength  and  “grace”  we get  from our LORD  shields us  from the onslaughts  of the sins  in this world.

It is upon seeing  and experiencing  “the LORD God”  as his  “sun  and shield”  that this psalmist  just had to exclaim,

For   a day  in Your courts  is better  than a thousand outside.
I would  rather stand  at the threshold  of the house  of my God,
Than dwell  in the tents  of wickedness.

This is what God Almighty wants us  to see  and experience also  as we face  all sorts of temptations,  troubles,  and trials  that try  to drag us down  into defeat.     Instead of falling down  into depression,  sins of various sorts,  or faithlessness,  we look to God’s grace  —  we let God be our  “sun  and shield”.     Looking  to God’s love  for us  is much better than  dwelling  “in the tents  of wickedness”.

All the temptations  and trials  of this world  truly are a test  to us  —  and we always remember  how much  “better”  it is  to stay near to  “my God”.

In the comfort  of God’s love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!       LORD,  thank You  for Your  grace  and glory  that helps us  through each day.”

Love,
Margaret
