The God  of All Grace  Who Called You

Sometimes  people feel offended  when they don’t  receive   an invitation  to some special event.     They might grumble,  “I don’t know why  everybody else  got an invitation,  except me.     They must not like me.”     That might be true  in a number  of life’s situations  with sinful people.     But,  it is not true  in our situation  with God Almighty.     Rather,  God sadly  has to say  in Isaiah 65:1-3,

I said,  ‘Here am I,  here am I,’
To a nation  which did not call  on My name.
I have spread out  My hands  all day long  to a rebellious people,
Who walk  in the way  which is not good,  following their own thoughts,
A people who continually provoke Me  to My face…

In spite  of our sinfulness,  God calls us  to Himself  in so many ways,  but we refuse  to listen.     Actually,  God tells us  in Jeremiah 31:3,

I have loved you  with an everlasting love;
Therefore  I have drawn you  with lovingkindness.

We need  “an everlasting love”.     God’s promise  of love  surely can be trusted.     As a matter  of fact,  Psalm 100:3  adds,

Know  that the LORD Himself  is God;
It is He  who has made us,  and not  we ourselves;
We are  His people  and the sheep  of His pasture.

When God calls us  His “sheep”,  He is saying  we belong  to Him  —  He loves us  and cares  for us.     He calls us  to Himself  and He doesn’t want us  to get lost,  hurt,  or afraid.     That means  God is calling us  to Himself  even right now.     There is no way  we can claim  we have not received  an invitation  to be God’s own  beloved.

We don’t have to  “buy”  God’s friendship  or  “earn” it  in any way.     Ephesians 2:8 pointedly tells us,

For by grace  you have been saved  through faith;  and that not  of yourselves,  it is the gift  of God.

Surely,  we should not refuse  to accept  “the gift  of God”.     When God calls us  to be His beloved children,  we should jump  at the chance  to accept His  gracious invitation.     Being a true child  of God  also means  we need  to get cleaned up  and  disciplined  to get  into shape  as true children  of the King of kings.     So,  we can expect  that God will help  to polish us up  a bit.     But,  we don’t have  to worry.     Our heavenly Father  will be caring for us  all the way.     1 Peter 5:10  tells us,

And after  you have suffered  for a little,  the God  of all grace,  who called you  to His eternal glory  in Christ,  will Himself  perfect,  confirm,  strengthen  and establish you.

God has called us  and wants us  to be His own  dear children.     But,  we must  let Him  be our LORD  and God  —  after all,  He is  “the God  of all grace,  who called you”.     We are capable  of refusing God.

In the joy  of our Savior’s  companionship,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for calling us  to be Your own  forever.”

Love,
Margaret
