The Ground  Without Any Foundation

In so many familiar sayings,  we’ve heard things like:   “Now,  listen up!”  —  “If I’ve told you once,  I’ve told you a thousand times!”  —  “You heard me.     Now do it!”  —  “How many times  do I have  to tell you?”  —  “You’re not deaf!”

These are all admonitions  to either  the inattentive,  the easily distracted,  the lazy,  or the down-right rebellious.     The bottom line is  that when a parent,  boss,  teacher,  or someone  in charge  says something,  we need  to be good listeners  and obedient doers.     Even  our Lord Jesus  gets after us  to be good hearers  and doers.     Jesus said  in Luke 6:46-49,

And why  do you call Me,  ‘Lord,  Lord,’  and do not do  what I say?

Everyone  who comes  to Me,  and hears  My words,  and acts  upon them,  I will show you  whom he is like:   he is like  a man  building  a house,  who dug deep  and laid a foundation  upon the rock;  and when a flood arose,  the river burst  against that house  and could not shake it,  because it had been  well built.

But the one  who has heard,  and has not acted accordingly,  is like a man  who built  a house  upon the ground  without any foundation;  and the river burst  against it  and immediately  it collapsed,  and the ruin  of that house  was great.

God Almighty  speaks  to everyone  in their conscience  —  in God’s word  in the Bible  —  in the witnessing of other people  —  in kindly deeds  of others  —  and all throughout  every little bit  of all  His wondrous creation.     No one can claim  he hasn’t heard  God’s words  in some form  or another.

Nevertheless,  many prove  to be  stubbornly disobedient  to God’s plain witness  in its various forms.     They have no respect  or honor  for their Creator  and Judge.     We know  what is sinful  —  but,  we deliberately  sin anyway.     Creation loudly  tells  of God’s absolute glory  and holiness  —  but,  many deny  God’s authority  over their lives.     The whole Bible  is a gathering  of historical evidence  over thousands  of years,  telling God’s prophecies  of a Savior  and how He fulfilled  those prophecies.     That’s a powerful reason  to listen up.

What we should  listen to  in all  of God’s witnessing  is our  “foundation  upon the rock”.     It is solid  —  well verified  —  and most dependable.     Listening  to God’s word,  believing it,  and obeying it  keeps us safe  in this world  and for all eternity.     Why?     Because  it is truth.

But,  if we prefer  the lies  in this world,  our “house”  —  our life  —  what we  “believe in”  —  will be built  “upon the ground  without any foundation.     Living  in lies  will ruin us  for all eternity  because lies  will all  be destroyed  in the Judgment  —  “and the ruin  of that house  was great”.

Let us  stay safe  in God’s truths.     Then,  in the strength  of His eternal word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for keeping us safe  in Your word.”

Love,
Margaret
