Work Out Your Salvation  With Fear  and Trembling

Sometimes  we might wonder  why it is  that certain evil things  really bother us.     We can see  the awful devastation  these various evils  are working  in the lives  of so many  —  and yet,  it seems unstoppable.     And then,  we see  various evils  in our own personal lives.     That  —  we really want  to get rid of.     The world might not see  our evil  as anything  of big consequence  —  but,  deep down  in our hearts,  we know  we must get rid  of it all  before it ruins us  in the eyes  of the Most Holy LORD.

And yet,  we realize  that our puny strength  and determination  is not enough  to honestly wipe evil out  of our lives.     Living  as a true child  of God  really is  a battle.     We need  to think on  what Paul wrote  in Philippians 2:12-13,

“…….work out your salvation  with fear  and trembling;  for it is God  who is at work  in you,  both  to will  and to work  for His good pleasure.”

That’s awesome.     We cannot earn  our own salvation,  because Jesus  has already freely  given salvation  to us  by faith  —  as Ephesians 2:8-9 says,

For by grace  you have been saved  through faith;  and that not of yourselves,  it is the gift  of God;  not as a result  of works,  that no one should boast.

But yet,  our salvation is to be  “worked out”   “with fear  and trembling”.     Jesus has already saved us,  but  in a heartfelt thanksgiving,  we strive to  “work out your salvation”.     We just  really want  to be obedient  to our Savior  because we know  we are greatly loved.     Faith shows itself  in a thankful heart.     It’s a thanksgiving thing  —  not a desperate attempt  to earn salvation  in any way.

And,  we do it   “with fear  and trembling”.     When we do  God’s will  “with fear”  we are obeying  with honest reverence.     We know God is holy.     We know He hates all evil  because it is  so loathsome,  gross,  and hurtful.     We want  to show love.     In the same breath,  we strive  to be obedient  with  “trembling”.     We just  fully realize  our inabilities  to be holy  in any way.     That makes us ashamed  of our weaknesses  and leads us  to plead  for God’s forgiveness  through Christ Jesus.     And,  we know  He will assuredly  forgive us,  as we humbly strive  to serve Him rightly,   according to  His salvation.

So,  we fully realize  our weaknesses  —  but,  it’s totally awesome  that  all this  “is God  who is at work  in you”.     God Almighty  is really  in us  —  showing us  what it means  to have reverence,  respect,  and obedience.     God leads our  “will”  to want  to do His “will”.     We’ll never be perfect  in this life  —  but we’ll want  to do His  “will”  just because it’s so good  —  and,  in love,  just because  it’s  “for His good pleasure”.

That’s love.

There’s an honest respect.     And,  there’s a great desire  to be pleasing  because of the love  we have received.

It makes all the difference  in the world.

In holy awe,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  just thank You  for all  You do.     We deeply  appreciate it.”

Love,
Margaret
