Therefore  Do Not  Be Ashamed

Some Christians  are ashamed  of standing up  for Christ  and God’s word.     They just want  to keep Christianity quiet  and not advertise  that they believe  in Christ  saving them  from “their sins”.     After all,  sins are shameful  and we don’t really want  to admit  to them  in front  of “everybody”.     We don’t want  to look like a “do gooder”  and then flub up.     And,  to go a bit further,  they don’t want  a reputation  for hanging out  with those bold preachers  of God’s word.     So many people say  those bold preachers  are just nuts.

But,  how should we be  —  and why?

In  2 Timothy 1:8-9,  Paul,  the bold preacher,  says,

Therefore  do not  be ashamed  of the testimony  of our Lord,  or of me  His prisoner;  but join  with me  in suffering  for the gospel  according to the power  of God,  who has saved us,  and called us  with a holy callingnot according  to our works,  but according to His own purpose  and grace  which was granted us  in Christ Jesus  from all eternity.

We have no  decent reason  to  be ashamed  of the testimony  of our Lord”.     Why?    Because  He  “has saved us”.     We’re not  to be dragging our sins  around  anymore.     We are free  from our sins  right now  because He  “has saved us”.     It’s a done deal.

In the Greek language,  that phrase  “has saved us”  is in the present tense.     That’s saying right now,  as we believe,  at this very moment  we are saved  for sure  —  we are being kept safe  and sound  —  we are a partaker  of Christ’s salvation  right now  —  we are totally reconciled  to God Almighty  right now.     When we die,  we’ll go straight  to heaven  because we are saved  right now.

We don’t have to worry  about doing enough good works  —  saying enough prayers  —  following dietary regulations  —  or following any other man-made rule.     All the man-made rules  and regulations  are something  to be ashamed of  because they are not  in God’s word  to us.

But,  when we’re holding  to God’s  true word  in the Bible,  do not  be ashamed  of the testimony  of our Lord”.     What is there  to be “ashamed of”?     God Almighty  has loved us  —  even when we were  in our sins.     Are we ashamed  of being loved  by our Creator  and Redeemer?     Are we ashamed  of truth?     Are we ashamed  of having  our eternal home  in heaven?     Are we ashamed  of righteousness,  holiness,  purity,  gentleness,  kindness,  and all things good?     Really?

God doesn’t  “have to”  love us.     He is righteous  and just  in condemning us  for our sins.     But,  He graciously chose  to love us.     That’s something  to be happy in.     It’s so awesome  and special.     It’s miraculous  because we cannot ever  deserve it  —  no matter  how hard  we might try.

In the relief  of being saved  and not needing  to be ashamed,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for taking away  the shame  of our sins  and making us holy  through faith  in Your word.”

Love,
Margaret
