The Tongue Is a Fire

The Tongue  Is a Fire

The New Testament book  of James  was written  by Jesus’ brother,  James,  around the year 49 A.D.     James was very concerned  for the faith  of the Christians,  who were facing  all sorts  of misleading teachings way back then.     In chapter 3,  James writes  about the horrendous evils  and loss  that happens  through the preaching  of false teachers.     James warns  that such teachers  will face  a  “stricter judgment”.

James  gives examples  of how  a small bit  in a horse’s mouth  controls the whole horse  —  a small rudder  controls the direction  of a large ship  —  and then,  James 3:5-8  cautions,

So also  the tongue  is a small part  of the body,  and yet it boasts  of great things.     Behold,  how great a forest  is set aflame  by such a small fire!

And  the tongue  is a fire,  the very world  of iniquity;  the tongue  is set among  our members  as that which defiles  the entire body,  and sets  on fire  the course  of our life,  and is set  on fire  by hell.

For every species  of beasts  and birds,  of reptiles  and creatures  of the sea,  is tamed,  and has been tamed  by the human race.     But no one  can tame  the tongue;  it is a restless evil  and full  of deadly poison.

It is the tongue  that has started  the many cults  of today.     Those cults  have destroyed  the souls  of millions.     Each cult started  with a supposedly  small lie.     Then  the speaker  got bolder  as people listened  with curiosity  at his  “interesting”  ideas.     The more the people  got involved  with the lies,  the further  they listened  and obeyed  the falsehoods  —  and the bolder  and wilder  the lies got  from the false preacher.     The end result  is a cult  that claims  to be Christian,  but denies  all the truths  of our salvation  through faith  in Christ Jesus alone.

Every single Christian  must keep  a careful watch  over everything  that comes out  of their mouth,  so that  in no way  will we  “lie against the truth”.    James 3:14     James notes that it is our tendency  to be arrogant,  earthly,  jealous,  selfishly ambitious,  and lacking  in understanding,  that leads us  to fall away  from God’s truths  as given  in the Bible.

Because we are all sinners  prone  to falling,  we must  be on guard  against all false teachings.     The only way  we can do that  is to daily take time  to prayerfully  study God’s word  straight  from the Bible.     For the sake  of our own eternal life  —  and the lives  of all  we come in contact with  —  we need  to know God’s truths  and let those truths  set us free  from all the lies  and falsehoods  in this world.     Just as  it is vital  to know  God’s truths,  it is absolutely necessary  that we live  by them.     Our lives need  to show  the results  of a true faith  that bears good fruits  —  and that pleases God  our Savior.

In the glad freedom  of Christ’s salvation,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  let us grow  in Your word  and so be saved.”

Love,
Margaret
