Because the LORD Is the One Who Holds His Hand
It is so comforting to have someone hold our hand. Whether it’s a time of troubles, sorrow, sickness, or death, we appreciate the love and concern of those who willingly hold our hand in true empathy.
In Psalm 37, King David comforts us all in our concerns over all the evils taking place right now in this world. David assures us of God’s impending judgments against all the wicked — and God’s tender care for each of us, day by day. We might feel so ashamed of the times we fall into a sin of any sort. Those are the times when we call out to our God for the strength we need to live to His glory. And, that’s when King David shows us, in Psalm 37:23-24,
The steps of a man are established by the LORD;
And He delights in his way.
When he falls, he shall not be hurled headlong;
Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.
This is one of those “Wow!” truths.
Here we are, truly wanting to be pleasing in God’s sight — so glad to honestly know the love of God — and then, we fall, big time, in our estimation. What happened?! In our heart, our fall is so shameful. We wanted to please our LORD, but we sinned anyway. It happened so fast and sneakily.
David had said, “The steps of a man are established by the LORD; and He delights in his way.” God did not lead us into sin. Rather, God actually “delights” in the ways of those who love and trust the LORD. But, no matter who we are, all of mankind is sinful. We were all born in sin — and we will sin until the day we die. Consequently, there are times when we will fall into sin.
From personal experience, David comforts us all. David lets us know that, “When he falls, he shall not be hurled headlong; because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.”
It is only those who despise the LORD God and His word who are “hurled headlong” into the eternal punishments for their incessant, hateful rebellions. But, when we purposefully and sincerely, in love, long to live according to God’s ways, our “steps” “are established by the LORD”. It is God Almighty who helps us along our way through life. We are not living in obedience by our own strength. Only God is able to help us step by step — one day at a time.
For all the times we are truly walking by faith and love, it is only “because the LORD is the One who holds his hand”. We are all THAT dependent upon God’s support moment by moment — for our entire lives.
Realizing God’s faithfulness, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, thank You for Your marvelous, most faithful love through thick and thin.”
Love,
Margaret
