Knowing This Beforehand,  Be on Your Guard

Whether  in sports,  business,  or in dealing  with safety issues ,  people usually practice  knowing how  to  “be on your guard”.     It’s all  for our own good  and leads to success  in whatever we’re doing.     After all,  who wants  to lose the game,  lose all their money,  or get burned?     It’s just common sense  to always  “be on your guard”,  because of the reality  of the way  things work  in this world.

Sadly,  most people are not  on “guard”  when it comes  to their spiritual safety.     They don’t even want  to think  about their eternity  or having a close relationship  with their Creator  and Savior.     They push the truths  of Judgment Day  out of their minds  because it interferes  with their desired  life style  —  and maybe  they’re afraid  of the truth.     Ignoring the truth  does not make it go away.

But,  the apostle Peter emphasizes  the utter importance  of paying close attention  to the consequences  of unbelief,  rebellion,  and false doctrines.     He warns us  about how this world  and all the elements  will be destroyed  with fire.     There certainly are  many details  about God,  Judgment Day,  and the destruction  of this world  that are  “hard to understand”.     That is often why  those who don’t read  God’s word  get caught  off  “guard”  with all sorts  of false doctrines,  philosophies,  cults,  and idolatrous religious beliefs.

In writing  about the biblical teachings  of the end days,  2 Peter 3:16-18  says,

……. in which are some things hard  to understand,  which the untaught  and unstable distort,  as they do also  the rest  of the Scriptures,  to their own destruction.

You therefore,  beloved,  knowing this beforehand,  be on your guard  lest,  being carried away  by the error  of unprincipled men,  you fall  from your own steadfastness,  but grow  in the grace  and knowledge  of our Lord  and Savior Jesus Christ.     To Him  be the glory,  both now  and to the day  of eternity.     Amen.

Peter is  showing us  how  to stay safe  and  “be on your guard”.     Remembering  how greatly God loves us  in Christ Jesus,  we are  to  “grow  in the grace  and knowledge  of our Lord  and Savior Jesus Christ.”     That simply means  to daily read God’s word  in the Bible  —  pay attention  to it  —  study it  —  pray about it  —  and apply it  to our daily living.     That kind of being  “on your guard”  will enable God  to teach us  His truths  through His word  to us.

Our souls  are in danger  every day  because of all the  “unprincipled men”  teaching all sorts  of  “error”  and false doctrines.     If we don’t practice  being  “on your guard”  we will become victims  “of unprincipled men”  —  people who are much more interested  in money  and their own popularity  than in teaching  God’s truths  and the salvation  of our souls.

Ever so glad  that God’s word  to us  is eternal because  of His power  and authority,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for teaching us  through Your eternal word.”

Love,
Margaret
