He Is Not the God of the Dead, But of the Living

He Is Not  the God  of the Dead,  But  of the Living

When Jesus  was discussing  eternal life  with the Sadducees,  who did not believe  in the resurrection  of the dead,  Jesus said to them  in Mark 12:26-27,

But regarding  the fact  that the dead rise again,  have you not read  in the book  of Moses,  in the passage  about the burning bush,  how God spoke  to him,  saying,  “I AM  THE GOD  OF ABRAHAM,   AND THE GOD  OF ISAAC,   AND THE GOD  OF JACOB”?

He is not  the God  of the dead,  but of the living;  you are greatly mistaken.

When Jesus said,  “He is not  the God  of the dead,”  He taught  that God   is not  the God  of the spiritually dead.     The spiritually dead  are all those  who flatly refuse  to do what is right  —  and refuse  to recognize the LORD  as the God of gods  and LORD of lords.     They are the unbelievers  —  those who mockingly imagine  that God can never judge them  or send them  to hell.

When Jesus pointed out  that the LORD  is the God  “of the living”,  He is teaching us  that the LORD  is forever  and ever  the God  of all those  who believe  in Him  and His salvation  through faith  in Christ Jesus.     Those  who are spiritually living  through faith  will surely  live eternally  with the living God  of all.

So,  even though  Abraham,  Isaac,  and Jacob  had died  when they were  on earth  —  and were known  to be buried  on this earth  —  they were  actually  “living”  with the eternal,  “living”  God Almighty  in all eternity.     Because  of their faith  in the LORD,  they were alive spiritually  during their earthly life  —  and their souls  are now alive  with God  in heaven.

It is not good  to be  “greatly mistaken”  about the almighty power  of God  to save  our souls  and resurrect our bodies.     Such a belligerent refusal  to believe  in the love  and power  of God  will end  in eternal judgment  in hell.     All  of God’s word  coupled  with God’s power  in all  of creation  provides us  with all the evidence necessary  to understand that  “He is not  the God  of the dead,  but  of the living.”

We allow God  to teach us  these things  as we meditate  on His word  and see  how He has proven  His ability  to fulfill all  of His promises.     Ever glad  to know  the living God  through His eternal word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for giving us  eternal life  through faith  in Christ Jesus.”

Love,
Margaret
