He Delivered Us  From the Domain  of Darkness

I don’t know  if it is done any more,  but years ago prisoners  were often kept  in dungeons,  where they never saw  the light  of day.     It was depressing,  cold,  and damp.     In their loneliness  and utter depression,  many prisoners  went mad.     It was the darkness  that really got  to them.

Satan’s rule  over people  with every sort  of wickedness  and ominous evil  is often called  a “domain  of darkness”.     When surrounded  and bombarded  with so many evils,  people feel like  they are trapped  in a  “domain  of darkness”.     They lose hope  of ever getting out  of the sins  that have entrapped them.     In their hopelessness,  their lives seem very dark  and maddening.

When we are trapped  in the dark,  sinful ways  of this world,  we need  to know  that there really is  a way out.     There is a way  we can live  in the light,  freedom,  and peace  of God Almighty.     The apostle Paul  wrote in Colossians 1:13-14,

For He delivered us  from the domain  of darkness,  and transferred us  to the kingdom  of His beloved Son,  in whom we have redemption,  the forgiveness  of sins.

Our LORD  and Creator  sent His only begotten Son,  Christ Jesus,  to pay  for all our sins  —  so that we have been redeemed  —  we have been purchased  with the blood  of Jesus.     The blood  of Jesus bought us  out of that  “domain  of darkness”.     When we belong  to Jesus  through faith  in His suffering,  death,  and resurrection,  He gives us  “the forgiveness  of sins.”

We can walk out  of that “domain  of darkness”.     We don’t even belong there  any more.     We belong  in the light  and freedom  of our  blood-bought “redemption”.

It is only in coming  to know Christ  as our Savior  that we can be freed  “from the domain  of darkness”.     That means  it is absolutely necessary for us  to allow God  to teach us His word.     As we read,  study,  and prayerfully meditate  on God’s word,  we will grow  in understanding  and knowing  the love  of God  for us  in Christ Jesus.     As we daily live  in the light  of God’s word,  we will learn  to live  in a way  that is  “worthy  of the Lord,  to please Him  in all respects,  bearing fruit  in every good work  and increasing  in the knowledge  of God.”   ( Colossians 1:10 )

And then  we will be able  to honestly and joyfully  thank our LORD  for all  that He  has done  for us.     Living in the light  of His love  is the freedom  we need.

Refreshed  in the light  of God’s eternal word  to us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD God Almighty,  thank You  for saving us  from the domain  of darkness  that is in this world  —  and for making us worthy saints  through the blood  of Christ  to live with You  forever.”

Love,
Margaret
