You Have  Enclosed Me Behind  and Before

There are times  when we might imagine  that God Almighty  is not watching  over us.     We feel alone  and do not know  the road ahead.     We don’t know which way  to turn  —  or what to do.     But,  the truth  of the matter is  that we are  not alone.     Our LORD God  and Savior  is with us  and has promised  to never  leave us.

King David  knew that truth  very well  and describes God’s  intimate closeness  to us  in Psalm 139.     He goes so far  as to say  in Psalm 139:5-6,

You have enclosed me behind  and before,
And laid  Your hand  upon me.
Such knowledge  is too wonderful  for me;
It is too high.    I cannot attain  to it.

The bottom line is  as Jesus says  in John 4:24,

God  is spirit,  and those who worship Him  must worship  in spirit  and truth.

We don’t have  a clue  as to how God  is leading us.     “Such knowledge  is too wonderful  for me.”     Although we’ll never  be able  to figure it out,  we realize  that we have no control  over many circumstances  in our lives.     We don’t have any control  —  but God does.     David expressed that by saying,  You have  enclosed me behind  and before,  and laid Your hand upon me.”

Because God had everything  in our past  (behind)  in His control  —  and He has everything  in our future  (before)  in His control  —  we can take comfort  in His almighty power  and love.     Whatever  is happening,  God will work it all  for our good  in the end.     We just need  to trust His love,  care,  and wise purpose,  whatever may happen.

That is  how it was  for Daniel  when he was thrown  into the lion’s den.     It was  that way  for Shadrach,  Meshach  and Abednego  as the king  had them thrown  into the fiery furnace.     Elijah faced  the fury  of Jezebel  out to kill him.     Peter faced those  who crucified him.     King David faced  his own son,  Absalom,  trying  to kill him  and take over his kingship.     This list  could go on  and on.

And then,  there’s us.     We all face different sorts  of fearful challenges.     In each one,  we must prayerfully  bring to mind,  You have enclosed me  behind  and before,  and laid  Your hand  upon me.”     God is with us.     His intimate care  is far beyond  our measly  understanding.     But,  we don’t have  to know how  God will work things out  or what the future  will hold for us  on this earth.

We just need  to know that God  is with us.     He will be our strength  and stay.

We look  at our past  —  what is  “behind”  us.     We’ve had  many deliverances  and need  to acknowledge  the LORD  for them all.     We don’t know how God managed  to work things out,  but He did.     Now  we’re here today.     We can know  that God will faithfully go  “before”  us  in everything Godly endeavor  in our future.

So,  we daily praise Him  for His wonderful love,  and say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  Your constant nearness  is precious  and wonderful.”

Love,
Margaret
