Remember  From Where  You Have Fallen

Jesus’  love  for each  of us  is so great  that for the sake  of our salvation,  He gives us strong warnings.     It is so easy  for us  to imagine  that we can work  our way  to heaven  by persevering  in certain aspects  of a true Christian life.     We might feel  we are really good Christians  for all the trials  we have endured  and in which  we have strongly  stood up  for Christ.     It is good  that we endure  our trials  and rightly stand up  for God’s truths.

But,  in all our persevering  as Christians,  we are still sinners,  fully capable  of falling  into some  most awful sins.     So  in love,  Jesus faithfully  gives us a warning  in Revelation 2:4-5,

But  I have this against you,  that you have left your first love.

Therefore  remember  from where you have fallen,  and repent  and do the deeds  you did  at first,  or else  I am coming  to you  and will remove  your lampstand out  of its place — unless you repent.

This is a most serious falling.     To these  hard-working Christians,  intent on  obediently working  for Christ  in all righteousness,  Jesus lovingly  —  and sternly  —  gives a warning.     They were trying  so hard  to fight against  all evil men  and all false preaching  that they no longer loved  their Lord and Savior.     They had turned  to a form  of intensive,  work righteousness,  instead of simply  loving Jesus  and living  in an on-going  response  to Jesus’  love  for us  on the cross.

That is a wickedness  that one can easily overlook.     It is  so easy  to fully agree  with the word  of God,  but get  so distracted  with the things  in this world,  that we forget  about loving  our Lord.     We might imagine  that we are doing well,  but if we take  a long,  deep-down look  into our hearts,  we simply aren’t as loving  towards our Savior  as we used  to be.

For things like this,  James 1:22-24 tells us,

But prove yourselves  doers  of the word,  and not merely hearers  who delude themselves.

For if anyone  is a hearer  of the word  and not a doer,  he is like a man  who looks  at his natural face  in a mirror;  for once  he has looked  at himself  and gone away,  he has immediately  forgotten  what kind  of person  he was.     But one  who looks intently  at the perfect law,  the law  of liberty,  and abides by it,  not having become a forgetful hearer  but an effectual doer,  this man  will be blessed  in what he does.

Let us  examine our hearts often  to see  if we really  are living  in the true love  of Christ.     For the sake  of Jesus’ love  for us,  we should make sure  of our sincere love  for Him.     Abiding in His word  will keep us close  to His heart.

In the joy  of our Lord’s love  for us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for the faithfulness  of Your true love.”

Love,
Margaret
