This Persuasion  Did Not Come  From Him  Who Calls You

There are many aspects  of the gospel  —  the word  of God  —  that lead us  to perk up our ears,  listen,  and really desire  the wondrous promises  of God.     We truly want  the peace  —  the forgiveness  —  the eternal life.     But,  from that moment  of wonder,  we can get hoodwinked.     Someone  —  some false teacher  —  can lead us  to imagining  there are strings attached  to God’s promises.

In our hopes,  we might easily  be led  into imagining  that we must keep  various Old Testament laws  ( or their laws )  before we can attain  the peace,  forgiveness,  and eternal life  that we desire.     The apostle Paul  does not want anyone  to be hoodwinked  into trying to keep  any Old Testament laws,  so he wrote  in Galatians 5:8,

This persuasion  did not come  from Him  who calls you.

When Christ Jesus preached  the gospel  of forgiveness  and the love  of God,  He did not tell anyone  that they had  to obey  any Old Testament laws  —  or the laws  of men  —  in order  to be saved.     Much rather,  Jesus preached forgiveness  through faith  and trust  in the eternal words  of salvation  from God.     As Jesus preached  in John 15:4,

Abide  in Me,  and I in you.     As the branch  cannot bear fruit  of itself  unless it abides  in the vine,  so neither can you  unless you abide  in Me.

Unless we live  in the gospel words  of Christ,  we cannot bear  the fruits  of faith  in Christ.     We need  to realize  that the Old Testament laws  were only a shadow  of the righteousness  of Christ  on our behalf.     Christ Jesus  has already  perfectly obeyed all  of the Law  on our behalf.     There is absolutely no more  that can be  perfectly done,  because all of our efforts  are tainted  with sin.

The bottom line is  that we must beware  of any  and all  false preachers  who try  to persuade us  to obey  their man-made rules  for gaining eternal salvation.     Why?     “This persuasion  did not come  from Him  who calls you.”

Just because  our Savior,  Jesus Christ,  did not lay out  a bunch  of laws  for us  to obey  —  anybody who does  lay out laws  for us   to obey  is definitely NOT   from Christ our Savior.     The only law  we need  to obey  is the law  of love  in Christ Jesus.     When we love  as our Savior desires us  to love,  we will love  others,  as Jesus said  in John 15:12,

This is My commandment,  that you love  one another,  just as   I have loved you.

Let us not be persuaded  by anything  other than  the word  of God.     That means  we must study  God’s word,  in order  to comprehend  what it is  that God desires  of us.

In the persuasion  of God’s words  to us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  You have set  us free.     Let us always abide  in You,  so that You  might abide  in us.”

Love,
Margaret
