A Good Conscience

A Good Conscience

There are times  in our lives  when it is necessary  for our conscience  to bother us.     In such times,  we must confess our sins  to our Savior  and ask  for His forgiveness  —  trusting in His promise  to always forgive us  every time  we turn  to Him.     Then,  if someone asks us,  “Do you think you’ll go  to heaven  when you die?”  we can assuredly say,  “Definitely,  yes!”

We can say,  “Yes”  because God’s word  promises us  full forgiveness  —  and because  of the fact  that we have already been  made holy  through faith  in the blood  of Christ Jesus.     That is why 1 Timothy 1:5 says,

But the goal  of our instruction  is love  from a pure heart  and a good conscience  and a sincere faith.

In other words,  Paul was telling Timothy  that in all his work  as a preacher  of God’s word,  Timothy’s  “goal”  was  to teach the people  to “love  from a pure heart”  as they remembered  God’s love  for them  —  they were also  to love  from  “a good conscience”  knowing for sure  that the blood  of Jesus  had already cleansed them  —  and finally,  they were to love  with a  “sincere faith”,  as they remembered  the power  of God  in bringing us  a Savior.

Then,  in  1 Timothy 1:19,   Paul instructed Timothy  to be,

…….keeping faith  and a good conscience,  which some have rejected  and suffered shipwreck  in regard  to their faith.

Some of the new Christians  stopped having faith  and believing  that Jesus’ blood  had really washed away  all their sins.     When they sinned  in the normal course  of time,  they just didn’t believe  Jesus had the power  to take away  that sin  and would continue  to keep them holy.     They were denying  the love and power  of God,  their Savior.     With such a fearful unbelief,  they  “suffered shipwreck  in regard  to their faith”.     We need  to always  look to Jesus  and trust  in His cleansing power  —  otherwise we are denying God  and condemning ourselves  through an unwarranted unbelief.

This fits right in with Titus 1:15,

To the pure,  all things  are pure;  but to those  who are defiled  and unbelieving,  nothing is pure,  but both their mind  and their conscience  are defiled.

Unbelief  in the promises  of God’s love  and power  makes people suspicious,  unable to trust,  and  “defiled”.     To imagine  that the most holy LORD God,  our Creator  and Redeemer,  will not  or cannot  keep His word  is calling God Almighty a liar.     What could be worse?     With such unbelief,  “both their mind  and their conscience  are defiled.”     They did it  to themselves  by refusing  to admit  to the truths  of God’s eternal word.

If we desire  “a good conscience”,  we need  to become grounded  in the word  of God  in the Bible.     We cannot afford  to reject  God’s promises  and live  in unbelief.     We cannot afford  to not trust  the LORD God Almighty  who has already proven  His power  to keep His word.

Ever glad  that our Savior  gives us  “a good conscience”,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for cleansing us  from all our sins.”

Love,
Margaret
