Cleanse  Your Conscience

Many people carry  a heavy load  of guilt  with them  day after day.     They simply  cannot forget  what they did ten,  fifteen,  twenty  years ago.     They feel so unforgiven  and unworthy,  even though  they greatly desire forgiveness  and do their level best  to lead a God-pleasing life.

The writer  of the book of Hebrews  in the Bible shows us  how the Old Testament Israelites  were  always bringing   various animal sacrifices  for the cleansing  of their sins.     According to God’s promises,  they were always forgiven  as they turned  to God with humble,  repentant hearts.     Of course,  they would sin again,  as we all do,  and then  their conscience  would drive them  to make another sacrifice,  in order to receive  the much needed forgiveness.     This was a never-ending process  because we all  sin daily.

The animal sacrifices  were only temporarily acceptable  because they were simply  a way  of pointing  to our Savior,  who made the ultimate sacrifice  that truly pays  for all our sins.     The Israelites  always had the burden  of needing  to make more sacrifices.     After mentioning that,  Hebrews 9:14 emphatically points out,

How much more  will the blood  of Christ,  who through the eternal Spirit  offered Himself  without blemish  to God,  cleanse  your conscience  from dead works  to serve  the living God?

Christ was perfectly sinless  —  “without blemish”.     That is why  “the blood  of Christ”  is able  to thoroughly  cleanse  your conscience  from dead works  to serve  the living God.”     Christ’s perfect sacrifice  makes us  totally clean  and truly holy  in God’s sight.     Christ’s sacrifice makes us  a beloved child  of God.     As children  of God,  we know  and trust  in the loving forgiveness  of our heavenly Father.     That is our joy  and confidence.     Our loving heavenly Father  is not going  to refuse us  the forgiveness  we need.     Every time He sees us,  He sees His perfected  and holy children  through the blood  of Christ.

That is why  we don’t have  to make  animal sacrifices  for our forgiveness  —  and why  we no longer do  all sorts  of  “dead works”  to try and gain  God’s approval.     The Israelites  were following all sorts of traditions,  rituals,  and good works  to try  to earn  God’s approval.     Those were “dead works”.     They weren’t really doing anything  to change the people’s hearts.     The people needed  clean hearts  that would gladly,  and naturally respond  to God’s love  by living  according to God’s love.

Because we now live  in the loving forgiveness  of God,  our lives reflect  that love.     We’re no longer  running around  doing  “dead works”  to try  and earn God’s favor.     We already have  God’s favor  by believing  in Christ Jesus  as our Savior  —  the One  who has  forgiven  all our sins.     We are free  to live  in loving service.     When we lay  the burdens  of our guilt  at the feet  of our Savior,  He takes them all.     They no longer belong  to us.

With a truly  clean conscience  through faith  in Jesus,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for being  the spotless Lamb  of God  on our behalf.”

Love,
Margaret
