Grace and Knowledge

Grace  and Knowledge

Years ago,  I had a pastor  (of all people)  tell me  that I shouldn’t study  God’s word  so much  because doing so  would lead  to unbelief.     I couldn’t  believe my ears.     That is directly opposite  of what God’s word  tells us.     I can’t remember  my exact reply,  but it was something  to the effect  that God’s word tells us  to study and meditate  on every word  from our Lord.

When Peter instructs us  to pay close attention  to God’s word  in these end days,  he says in 2 Peter 3:17-18,

You therefore,  beloved,  knowing this beforehand,  be on your guard  so that you  are not carried away  by the error  of unprincipled men  and fall  from your own steadfastness,  but grow  in the grace  and knowledge  of our Lord  and Savior Jesus Christ.

It is impossible  to  “grow  in the grace  and knowledge  of our Lord”  unless we daily study  what He wants us  to know.     Even Proverbs 9:10 tells us,

The fear  of the LORD  is the beginning  of wisdom,
And  the knowledge  of the Holy One  is understanding.

We have to know God  in order to respect  and love Him rightly,  and  so we can understand  why His ways  are best  for us.     When we rightly know  and trust God,  we will accept  the grace  He extends to us  through Christ Jesus.     It is vital  for God’s children  to want  to get  to know  their heavenly Father  and Savior.     Such knowledge strengthens our love  for God  and our faith  in His ways.

In Ephesians 3:19,  Paul strongly prayed  for the Ephesians  that they would…

……. know the love  of Christ  which surpasses knowledgethat you may be filled up  to all the fulness  of God.

When we go through all sorts  of trials  in this world,  we need  to know the love  of God  so well  that we truly trust  in His ways  for us.     The better we know God,  the more  we will love Him.     And,  the more  we know God,  the more strongly  we will put our hope  in Him.     Psalm 9:10  tells us,

And those  who know Your name  will put  their trust  in You,
For You,  O LORD,  have not forsaken  those who seek You.

For now  we really need  “the grace  and knowledge  of our Lord”  as the world  and false preachers try  to destroy  our faith.     When we get to heaven,  then we will see  the full glory  of our LORD and Savior.    It’s as Paul says  in 1 Corinthians 13:12,

For now  we see  in a mirror dimly,  but then  face to face;  now I know  in part,  but then  I will know fully  just as I also  have been  fully known.

As we find  our joy  in God’s word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  we are so blessed  to be able  to grow daily  in Your grace  and knowledge.”

Love,
Margaret
