Slaves

The news lately  has been reporting riots,  looting,  and total destruction  of businesses  —  all in the name of  “justice”.     The implication is  that black people  have the right  and need  to act this way  because their ancestors  were enslaved  years ago,  and they now face discrimination.     Some of those  who are demanding  some sort  of  “justice”  and reparation carry the title of “Reverend”.     That is problematic  in God’s word.     There are hundreds  of Bible references  regarding slavery.     We will only mention a few.

When  Peter talks about false preachers,  he commented  in  2 Peter 2:19,

……. promising them freedom  while they themselves  are slaves  of corruption,  for by what a man  is overcome,  by this he is enslaved.

There are many kinds  of “slaves”,  but the worst  is to be  slaves  of corruption”.     If we are  to long  for real freedom,  we need  to want  to be free  from the sins  that have  enslaved  us.     And that is totally possible  through Christ Jesus,  who says  in John 8:36,

If  therefore  the Son  shall make you free,  you shall be free  indeed.

The amazing thing is  that when Christ sets us  free,  we gladly become His  “slaves”  to serve Him  the rest  of our days  in faith,  hope,  and love.     One can use an online Bible search site  to find out that  those who believed  in Jesus  called themselves His  “bond-servants”,  which is another name  for  “slaves”.     Just a few examples  of those who did so  include  Moses,  Jude,  Peter,  Paul,  and James.     And,  as far as the rest  of us  who believe  in Jesus and want to serve Him,  Paul tells us “bond-servants”  in 2 Timothy 2:24,  that,

The Lord’s bond-servant  must not be quarrelsome,  but be kind  to all,  able  to teach,  patient when wronged,  with gentleness correcting those  who are in opposition,  if perhaps  God may grant them repentance  leading to the knowledge  of the truth,  and they may come  to their senses  and escape  from the snare  of the devil,  having been held captive  by him  to do his will.

As far as that goes,  Jesus teaches us  in Matthew 20:26-28,

……. whoever wishes  to become great  among you  shall be your servant,  and whoever wishes  to be first among you shall be your slavejust as the Son of Man  did not come  to be served,  but to serve,  and to give His life  a ransom  for many.

Everyone  who wants  to be called  “Reverend”  needs to think  about what God Almighty  is telling us here.     God’s children are instructed  in Romans 16:17,

……. keep your eye  on those  who cause dissensions  and hindrances  contrary to the teaching  which you learned,  and turn away  from them.

There have been  slaves  since the beginning  in most every tribe and nation.     Most of them  were captives  in a war  —  just as when Israel  was defeated  and taken captive to Babylon.     God Almighty  was still  in control  and told Israel  in Jeremiah 29:4-5,  and 7,

Thus says the LORD  of hosts,  the God of Israel,  to all the exiles  whom I have sent  into exile  from Jerusalem  to Babylon,  ‘Build houses  and live in them;  and plant gardens  and eat their produce…….     Seek the welfare  of the city  where I have sent you  into exile,  and pray  to the LORD  on its behalf;  for in its welfare  you will have welfare.’

God takes care  of the  “welfare”  of all those  who put their faith  and trust  in Him.     Free  in Christ,  we are free  to honestly serve  our Lord  and say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for real freedom.”

Love,
Margaret
