By the Breath of His Mouth

By  the Breath  of His Mouth

The breath  of our mouths  indicate that we are still alive.     Other than that,  we expel our breath  as we speak  and sing  —  or for creating enough vapor  to clean our glasses.   :  )     Of course,  we can also  blow up a balloon.     Other than simple things  like these,  our breath cannot do a whole lot.     And,  when we think about the influence  of our breath  in comparison to all  of creation,  our breath hardly amounts to anything  —  although the words  that come out  of our mouths  can either hurt  or help  the people around us.

With the LORD God,  it is totally and wondrously  most different.     Psalm 33:6-12  tells us,

By  the word  of the LORD  the heavens  were made,
And by the breath  of His mouth  all their host.
He gathers the waters  of the sea together  as a heap;
He lays up  the deeps  in storehouses.
Let all the earth  fear the LORD;
Let all the inhabitants  of the world stand  in awe  of Him,
For He spoke,  and it was done;
He commanded,  and it stood fast.

The LORD nullifies  the counsel  of the nations;
He frustrates  the plans  of the peoples.
The counsel  of the LORD stands  forever,
The plans  of His heart  from generation  to generation.
Blessed is the nation  whose God  is the LORD,
The people  whom He has chosen  for His own  inheritance.

Our abilities  and God’s abilities  cannot even be compared  because of their vast differences.     To simply speak everything  into existence  is way beyond  our ability  to comprehend.     All that the psalmist describes  tells of power  and love.     The love  is seen  in how  all things  work together  for our benefit.     Day and night  for health and rest  —  vegetation and animals  for food,  enjoyment, and service  —  water and air  for life cycles  —  decomposition  for renewal of life  —  and the wonders  go on and on.

It’s comforting  to see  that the LORD  didn’t create all this  and just let it be.     He lovingly stays  in control as He  “nullifies the counsel  of the nations”  —  “frustrates the plans  of the peoples”  —  and causes His  “counsel”  to stand  “forever”.      It is  with these powers  that the LORD  brought us the Savior,  and led  all things  so that His suffering,  death,  and resurrection  freely gives us  the eternal salvation  we need.

All this comforts us  in knowing  that  “Blessed  is the nation  whose God  is the LORD,  the people  whom He has chosen  for His own  inheritance.”     God Almighty  has actually  “chosen” us  “for His own inheritance”.     He has bought us  with the blood  of Christ  and we belong  to Him.     He wants us  for His very own  that much.      That’s an amazing thing  for the Almighty LORD  to even want to do  in all of His vast creation,  created with His  breath.

Because He wants us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  it is awesome  that You condescend  to love us  so dearly  —  You who created all things  “by the breath”  of Your  “mouth”.

Love,
Margaret
