My  Confidence

So much  of the time  these days,  a philosophy  is being instilled  in our youth.     It says things like:  “You are great”,  “Believe in yourself”,  “You are a winner”,  “The power  of pride”,  “You can do anything you want”,  and all sorts  of similar  “confidence builders“.     Whole books are written  about believing  in yourself.

We can  and should  have a  “confidence”  —  but not the  “confidence”  of this world.     Wouldn’t you know it  —  God tells us  what sort  of  “confidence”  we should have.     Just look at  these few  biblical references  about  “confidence”  and see  what they show us:

For You are my hope:
O Lord GOD,  You are my confidence  from my youth.
By You  I have been sustained  from my birth;
You are He  who took me  from my mother’s womb;
My praise  is continually  of You.
     Psalm 71:5-6

They should put  their confidence  in God
And not forget  the works  of God,
But keep  His commandments.
     Psalm 78:7

In the fear  of the LORD  there is strong confidence,
And his children  will have refuge.
    Proverbs 14:26

Now  as they observed  the confidence  of Peter  and John  and understood  that they were uneducated  and untrained men,  they were amazed,  and began  to recognize them  as having been  with Jesus.     Acts 4:13

This was  in accordance  with the eternal purpose  which He carried out  in Christ Jesus  our Lordin whom  we have boldness  and confident access  through faith  in Him.     Ephesians 3:11-12

We have come  to know  and have believed  the love  which God has  for us.     God is love,  and the one  who abides  in love  abides in God,  and God abides  in him.     By this,  love is perfected  with us,  so that we may have confidence  in the day  of judgment;  because  as He is,  so also are we  in this world.     1 John 4:16-17

Either directly  —  or indirectly  —  every one  of these verses  is pointing  to a  “confidence” that is built  on knowing  and respecting  God’s love  for us.     A Christian’s  “confidence”  is  in God  our Savior  —  not  in ourselves.     The  “uneducated”  fishermen,  Peter and John,  had  “confidence”  in God  as they boldly preached the gospel.     When they preached,  they were looking at  “the works  of God”  in Christ Jesus.     Their preaching wasn’t  about them  —  it was  about God’s love  and salvation  for us.

The  “fear of the LORD”  is simply  a reverent respect  for the LORD.     We respect Him  because He created  all things  and has the power  to sustain everything  over thousands  of years.     We also respect Him  because He has the power  to fulfill His promises  of forgiveness  in Christ.     Knowing  we are forgiven sinners,  who can approach God  in prayer,  gives us  “confidence”.

Believing in  “the love  which God has  for us”  leads us  to love God  in return  and put our  “confidence”  in Him.

God wants us  to be  “confident”  because of His love and salvation.     Manufacturing a false  “confidence”  in our weaknesses  creates a self-centered pride  that will be a downfall.

Trusting God’s love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  You are our confidence!”

Love,
Margaret
