Your  Light

In a number  of places  in the Bible,  Jesus is called  the “Light”  of the world  because He shows us  God’s way  of salvation  and righteousness.     There is no way  in the world  sinful mankind  would have come up  with a plan  of salvation  like God’s plan.     After all,  in God’s plan there were,  first of all,  thousands  of years  of prophecies describing the Savior.     And then,  all those prophecies  came true  in the one man,  Jesus Christ.     Not only that,  but God’s salvation  totally depends  on faith  in Jesus.     We don’t get to boast about anything.     Rather,  we are humbled  in realizing  that we are totally unable  to save ourselves  with anything we do.     Seeing all this,  the “Light”  should go on  for us.

When God’s word  talks about Jesus being  this world’s  “Light”,  it says things like,

There was the true Light  which,  coming into the world,  enlightens  every man.     John 1:9

Jesus again spoke  to them,  saying,  “I am the Light  of the world;  he who follows Me  will not walk  in the darkness,  but will have the Light  of life.     John 8:12

I have come  as Light  into the world,  so that everyone  who believes  in Me  will not remain  in darkness.     John 12:46

These verses show us  that the ways  of people  in this world  are nothing  but darkness.     Those who live  in the darkness  of unbelief  are stumbling around  in all sorts of wickedness,  hatefulness,  greed,  idolatry,  lies,  falsehoods,  and just  sheer worthlessness.     They don’t have  any truthfulness  in them.

As  “the true Light  —  “the Light  of the world”  —  Jesus gives  “light”  and truth  to all  who “follow”  Him  and  “believe”  in Him  —  He “enlightens” those  who believe  in Him.     So,  when we believe  in Jesus,  we should be  humbly receiving  His “light”.     That’s saying  that believers  will be listening  to Jesus’ gospel message,  and carefully learning  what God’s truths are.     Believers will be studying  God’s word  in the Bible  because they see  that the Bible  really is  God’s truths  to us.     Believers realize  that as the  “true Light,  Jesus will show them  the right way  to eternal salvation,  so they won’t stumble around  in the darkness  of this world’s sinfulness.

When we receive  “light”  from Jesus,  we become “lights”  to the world around us.     We know  God’s truth  —  and we live  in God’s truth.     That changes  our lifestyle.     Instead  of our hearts being filled  with everything wrong,  our hearts are  as Galatians 5:22-23  points out,

But the fruit  of the Spirit  is love,  joy,  peace,  patience,  kindness,  goodness,  faithfulness,  gentleness,  self-control;  against such things there is no law.

Because that is  what the “Light”  of Jesus does  to us,  Jesus tells us  in Matthew 5:16,

Let your light shine  before men  in such a way  that they may  see your good works,  and glorify  your Father  who is in heaven.

We shine in this world  because Jesus shines.     In the peace  and joy  of Jesus’  “Light”  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  thank You  for being You  and loving us.”

Love,
Margaret
