Have You  Seen Abraham?

It’s puzzling  how some people will positively say  that Jesus was a great prophet,  teacher,  and healer.     But,  they also  adamantly say Jesus is not God  or our Savior.     That doesn’t make sense.     If Jesus was a great prophet  and teacher  —  but not God  come down   to save us  —  then such a great prophet and teacher  has proven himself  to be a great liar.     Honestly great prophets  and teachers  do not lie.

But,  Jesus boldly stated  that He is God Almighty.     That is  part  of the reason  why the Jews wanted  to kill Him.     The Jewish religious leaders studied the Old Testament.     They knew very well  that when Moses asked God  what His name is,  so he could tell the Israelites,  God said  to Moses  in Exodus 3:14,

I AM  WHO  I AM.     Thus you shall say  to the sons  of Israel,  I AM has sent me  to you.

The implication  of God’s name is  that He exists  —  always has existed  —  and always will exist.     God has no beginning  or end.     He always has been God Almighty.     He always will be  God Almighty.     There simply is  no other God.

That brings us  to a time recorded  in John 8,  when Jesus was teaching  and the Jews were accusing Him  of having a demon  because He said,  “If anyone keeps My word  he will never see death.”     That really disgusted the Jews,  who said  in John 8:52-53,

“Abraham died, and the prophets also;  and You say,  ‘If anyone keeps My word,  he will never taste  of death.’     Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died?     ……. Who do You make Yourself out  to be?”

Then  in John 8:56-59 the following took place  as Jesus said,

“Your father Abraham rejoiced  to see My day,  and he saw it  and was glad.”

So the Jews said  to Him,  “You are not yet fifty years old,  and have You seen Abraham?

Jesus said  to them,  “Truly,  truly,  I say to you,  before Abraham  was bornI am.”

Therefore they picked up stones  to throw  at Him,  but Jesus hid Himself  and went out  of the temple.

As God Almighty,  Jesus has existed  from all eternity.     Abraham now lives  in heaven  because of his faith.     Therefore,  Abraham was alive  and glad  to see God our Savior  keep His promises  of salvation  in Christ Jesus.     And,  because Jesus is God,  He can say,  “Before Abraham  was born,  I am.

The Jews  could not compute  those truths  in their minds.     Jesus just seemed  like an ordinary person.     They could not see  how Jesus  could be God  in the flesh.     They felt  they had  to get rid  of a blasphemer,  so they tried  to stone Him.

Is that  what we try  to do  in our lives  —  get rid  of Jesus  in our lives,  so we can live  the way  we want  —  in our sinful weaknesses?

Since God exists  —  has always existed  —  and will always exist,  we are powerless  to change anything  about Him.     Since God is love,  we should never want  to change anything  about Him.     The truths  of God our Savior  are the most wondrous truths  we can cling to.

Holding onto  our Savior,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Jesus,  thank You  for dying  for our sins.”

Love,
Margaret
