Rest  In the LORD  and Wait Patiently  for Him

Our knowledge  of things  as they really are  —  and our knowledge  of the future  are very limited.     We know none  of the things  that the LORD knows  and plans  to do.     That is why  we tend  to worry,  fret,  fear,  and become angry   about the evil events around us.     It can be really hard  to not fret,  but because King David  knew and trusted  the LORD,  he was able  to entrust his life  into God’s hands.

In Psalm 37:7-10,  David wrote,

Rest  in the LORD  and wait patiently  for Him;
Do not fret  because of him  who prospers  in his way,
Because of the man  who carries out wicked schemes.

Cease from anger  and forsake wrath;
Do not fret;  it leads only  to evildoing.
For evildoers  will be cut off,
But those  who wait  for the LORD,  they will inherit the land.

Yet a little while  and the wicked man will be no more;
And you will look carefully  for his place  and he will not be there.

Resting  “in the LORD”  is to just be quiet  in our heart,  patiently  and confidently expecting  God’s help.     We  “wait patiently  for Him”  because we know  God knows so much more than we do  —  and  —  God is almighty  in His power.     Nothing is impossible  with the LORD  —  and all things are possible.     Our Lord already knows everything  we are facing  —  and He does want us  to entrust everything  into His care.

Just as King David saw the  “wicked”  carrying out their  “schemes”  and  “prosper”  in their way,  we also see all sorts  of  “wicked”  people seemingly prospering   in their wickedness.     Though we hate  to see their evil,  “evildoers  will be cut off”.     We are not  to imagine that  “evildoers”  will be victorious  in the end  and through eternity.     Throughout His word,  God promises them eternal destruction.     Since God is  the one-and-only Almighty,  we can  rest  in the LORD  and wait patiently  for Him,  even though we don’t understand everything  that is going on.

Time and again  throughout  his life,  David had to  “rest  in the LORD  and wait patiently  for Him”,  as he faced enemies  bent on killing him.     So, David knew perfectly well  what it meant  to honestly  “rest  in the LORD  and wait patiently  for Him”.     Many life-threatening experiences gave David much experience  in resting  and waiting.     He fought hard  in each battle  as his heart rested  and waited patiently for the LORD’s ways  to be carried out.

All God’s children  down through the ages  have had  to do the same.     So,  we look  to our Lord and Savior  in faith,  hope,  and love  as we  “rest  in the LORD  and wait patiently  for Him.”

Knowing the joy  and power  of Jesus’ resurrection victory,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You for giving us rest  in Your saving love.”

Love,
Margaret
