Making Wise  the Simple

Pride has been  a big problem  for the human race  since the beginning  of time.     We all want  to feel  like we’re  on top  of things.     We don’t enjoy feeling like we’re not  in control  of what is going on  around us.     In order  to keep  a good standing  in the eyes  of others,  one might even pretend  to be more knowledgeable  than they actually are.     That’s pride.     We want  to make out like  we’re strong,  smart,  capable,  and in control  —  all by our weesome.

Such pride is not  in the truth  of matters.     So,  our Lord wants  to guide us  into facing  the truths  of our situation.     In Proverbs 11:2,  we read,

When pride comes,  then comes dishonor.
But with the humble  is wisdom.

Then,  Proverbs 3:35  warns,

The wise  will inherit  honor,
But fools display dishonor.

We might wonder  how one keeps  from being proud  and foolish  —  ending up  with the shame  of “dishonor”.      Proverbs 29:23 says,

A man’s pride  will bring him low,
But a humble spirit  will obtain honor.

So, how do we come  to have  “a humble spirit”?     King David tells us  in Psalm 19:7,

The law  of the LORD  is perfect,  restoring the soul;
The testimony  of the LORD  is sure,  making wise  the simple.

If we want  to be  “wise”  enough  to not come to “dishonor”  of any sort,  we need  to stick  to the  “sure”  “testimony  of the LORD”.     All  of God’s word  has proven its trustworthiness  through the fulfilled prophecies  about our Savior,  Christ Jesus.     That’s why it is  “wise”  to pay attention  to it.     “The simple”  —  the humble  —  become  “wise”  by putting their faith  in God’s word.     That is when God Almighty  is able  to guide them  into His righteousness  and salvation  through Christ Jesus.

The proud people  of the world imagine  that their own strength  and smarts  will save them.     But,  they are a very troubled people  in so many ways.     Their souls have no honest peace  —  even though they try  to feign peace.     That is why they need  to know  that  “the law  of the LORD  is perfect,  restoring the soul”.      God is so willing  to help us,  if we would just turn  to His word  and trust  in it.

We shouldn’t be so proud  that we try  to believe  in ourselves  —  instead of believing  in the LORD  who created,  sustains,  and redeemed us.     When we daily study  God’s word,  we will  be humbled  —  and see  that its truths  really are truth.     Then our simplicity  will be made  “wise”  and our souls will be restored  in fellowship  with our Creator and Redeemer.

In the wonder  of being restored,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for opening up  Your word  to us  that we might be restored  and have the joy  of living  in Your word  —  knowing that You are eternally  in control  of all things.”

Love,
Margaret
