God’s Own Possession

When we go through long periods  of trials,  loneliness,  and weakness,  we might forget  just who we are.     When we forget  who we are,  we lose hope,  a sense of reality,  become despondent,  and fall into sin.     God’s word often reminds us  of who we are,  so it’s good  to remember these truths.     Just a few reminders include:

But  as many as received Him,  to them He gave  the right  to become children  of God,  even to those  who believe  in His name.    John 1:12

The Spirit Himself  testifies  with our spirit  that we are the children  of God.     Romans 8:16

It is not the children  of the flesh  who are children of God,  but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants.     Romans 9:8

See how great a love  the Father has bestowed  on us,  that we would be called children of God;  and such we are.     For this reason the world does not know us,  because it did not know Him.     1 John 3:1

But you are a chosen race,  a royal priesthood,  a holy nation,  a people  for God’s own possession,  so that you  may proclaim the excellencies  of Him  who has called you  out of darkness  into His marvelous light;  for you once were not a people,  but now you are the people  of God;  you had not received mercy,  but now you have received mercy.     1 Peter 2:9-10

The LORD God Almighty  is King of kings,  LORD of lords,  and God of gods  —  and we are His beloved children  through faith  in Christ Jesus.     We are children of the King  —  honest  and true royalty.     So we rise up,  look ahead  and upwards.     Whatever our circumstances,  we see who we are  in all eternity.     We don’t have to grovel  in the dire troubles  of this world.     As beloved children  of the King of kings,  we are  “a people  for God’s own possession.      We are victorious through Christ.

When Peter says we are  “a chosen race”,  the Greek word means we are God’s chosen kindred,  family,  offspring.     To be  “a royal priesthood”  means that we have  free access  to God  and offer the spiritual sacrifices  of faith,  hope,  and love.     To be  “a holy nation”  is to be part of  a whole multitude  of people  who live  in a holy manner  that glorifies God.     To be  “a people  for God’s own possession means that  since we do belong  to God,  He will preserve us  and save our souls,  just because we belong  to Him.     God won’t let anyone  or anything take us away  from Him.

So,  how should all this  change our feelings  of gloom,  doom,  and depression?     We are holy children of the LORD God Almighty.     What we experience now is transitory.     It won’t be this way forever.     Our heavenly Father will carry us through this  “so that you may proclaim the excellencies  of Him  who has called you  out of darkness  into His marvelous light.”     We are not victims of our circumstances  —  but victors.

Listen to God’s calling  and promises.     Then say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for making us  Your very own.”

Love,
Margaret
