Your Prophets  Have Seen  For You

In all  of our weaknesses,  people sometimes want  to know  what the future holds  for them.     Maybe they have an illness  and want to know  how things will turn out  for them.     There might even be a money investment  or job  that they want  to know the future of.     Some want greater details regarding the end of this world.     In their desire  for more information  about their uncertainties,  people will often turn to someone  they believe  is a prophet,  who they imagine  is able  to look into the future  —  instead of putting all things  into God’s loving care.

In the days  of Jeremiah,  the people of Israel were turning  to all sorts  of false preachers  —  false prophets  —  because they liked  what they heard  from them.     Lamentations 2:14 then says,

Your prophets  have seen  for you
False  and foolish visions;
And they have not exposed  your iniquity
So as to restore you  from captivity,
But they have seen  for you  false  and misleading oracles.

Those false prophets/preachers  had  “not exposed”  the  “iniquity”  of Israel.     They never preached about sin,  repentance,  right living,  forgiveness,  God’s mercy,  or anything like that.     They did not care one bit  about having the hearts  of the people turn  to the LORD.     They were more like the prosperity preachers  of today,  promising riches,  health,  success,  happiness,  etc.,  and forgetting about sin.     The main hidden desires  of these false prophets included  becoming rich,  popular,  and powerful over the people.

Because these false prophets did not care  about the eternal salvation  of the people,  they did not expose  the  “iniquity” of the people.     Talking about sin makes one rather unpopular  very quickly.

But,  wouldn’t  we much rather be  on our way  to heaven  than to hell?

We need  to know about our sins  so we can have a chance  to repent  and have the Savior  “restore” us.     We need  a right relationship  with our Creator,  Sustainer,  and Redeemer.

When Jesus spoke  of the end times,  He noted the same progression  of a downfall  of the people as Lamentations did.     In Matthew 24:11-13  Jesus says,

Many false prophets  will arise  and will mislead many.     Because lawlessness  is increased,  most people’s love  will grow cold.   But the one  who endures  to the end,  he will be saved.

It is because the false prophets  do not expose the “iniquity”  of the people  that “lawlessness is increased”  and  “love will grow cold”.     This has been taking place  for thousands  of years.     Those  who love listening  to the false prophets  are losing their chance  to be saved eternally  —  and they don’t even know it.

God’s children  need  to hang onto  Jesus’ promise  —  “But the one  who endures  to the end,  he will be saved.”     As we diligently study  and hold to  God’s promises,  we will be given  the strength  to endure  “to the end”.     Let us be careful  about who we listen to.     Stick to all  of  God’s given eternal word  in the Bible.     We don’t need  to look for more  —  but we do need  to trust our LORD.

Glad for God’s forewarning  and trusting His teachings,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for protecting us  through Your eternal word.”

Love,
Margaret
