Even His Prayer Is An Abomination

Some people wonder  about their prayers.     They feel  that all their prayers  should be answered,  according to a prescribed formula,  if they follow a certain set  of rules  for praying.     But,  they don’t even begin  to consider  what their whole lives  are like  in God’s eyes.     Somehow  they imagine  that they’ve just got  to be righteous  in God’s eyes,  no matter what their belief system  or lifestyle,  or spiritual resources.

So, we need  to consider Proverbs 28:9,

He  who turns away  his ear  from listening  to the law,
Even his prayer  is an abomination.

In other words,  here we learn  that the very first prerequisite  for answered prayer  is honestly listening to  and lovingly accepting only God’s instructions,  God’s directions,  and His prophetic teachings,  as they are given to us  throughout the Bible.     The Bible alone  is God’s word,  so we must not  be accepting  of any other book.     God’s word  in the Bible  is to be our only guide  to praying rightly.

One example  in God’s word is  in Isaiah,  chapter 1.     There God speaks  about how wayward Israel is.     They don’t seem  to have a caring clue  that the LORD is their Creator  and only Redeemer.     Somehow they imagine  that they can live  in their corruption,  while hypocritically making sacrifices  to the Lord  and observing various festivals  by rote.     They are not honestly trusting,  loving,  or honoring  the LORD.     Therefore,  God tells them  in Isaiah 1:15,

So  when you spread out  your hands  in prayer,
I will hide  My eyes  from you;
Yes,  even though you multiply prayers,
I will not listen.
Your hands  are covered  with blood.

It is obvious  that God wants  an honest trust,  love,  and honor.     God does not accept rote,  mindless worship  and prayer  that is self-centered,  selfish,  and lacking  in honest honor.     That is why we need  to seriously think  about Proverbs 28:9  —  “He who turns away  his ear  from listening  to the law,  even his prayer  is an abomination.”

The instructions  and directions  of other books  are not   the  “law”  that God wants us  to pay attention to.     It’s God’s word  —  the Bible  —  we need  to delve into  and care about.     That’s why 1 Peter 2:1-3  tells us,

Therefore,  putting aside  all malice  and all deceit  and hypocrisy  and envy  and all slander,  like newborn babies,  long  for the pure milk  of the word,  so that by it  you may grow  in respect  to salvation,  if you have tasted  the kindness  of the Lord.

As we pay attention  to God’s word,  trusting and believing  what God says  to us,  our prayers  will be filled  with faith,  hope,  and love.     We will be more aligned  with  —  and accepting of  —  God’s will  in our lives.     Then,  in peace,  we will know  that whatever happens,  God’s will  is best.

Trusting God’s love,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  Your goodness  and kindness are wonderful blessings.”

Love,
Margaret
