We Have Renounced  the Things Hidden  Because of Shame

Today  —  as always  —  there are a lot of false preachers around.     So,  what is their purpose?     They see religion  as a means  of making lots of money,  gaining power  over people,  and having people  look up  to them.     They will entrap people with teachings  of work righteousness  —  interestingly different doctrines  that are nothing but figments  of their imaginations  —  and a sense  of learning  great secrets  to set them up a notch  from everyone else.     It’s all a sham  —  nothing but a pack  of lies.

When the apostle Paul went around preaching,  he absolutely refused  to use such trickery  and false doctrine.     Because Paul  so greatly appreciated  God’s grace  towards him,  there was no way  he wanted  to ever change  the wonderful message  of the gospel  —  the gospel that saved him  from the consequences  of his sins.     This is why Paul wrote  in 2 Corinthians 4:1-2,

Therefore,  since we have this ministry,  as we received mercy,  we do not lose heart,  but we have renounced  the things hidden  because  of shame,  not walking  in craftiness  or adulterating  the word  of God,  but by the manifestation  of truth  commending ourselves  to every man’s conscience  in the sight  of God.

Paul knew  that God’s gift  of forgiveness  was a great “mercy”  that he did not deserve.     So,  he  “renounced the things hidden  because of shame”.     These  “things hidden  because of shame”  were all the lies  and false doctrines  of the false preachers.     It is a horrible shame  to twist God’s holy word  into lies  that rob people  of eternal salvation.

Paul did not ever want  to twist  or change  “the word  of God”.     Much rather,  Paul wanted  to preach only God’s truth.     It was a truth  that every person could check out  and verify  by studying the Old Testament promises  of a Savior,  and comparing them  to Jesus’ life,  suffering,  death,  and resurrection.     That way   the “conscience”  of “every man”  could be very sure  they were listening  to the true gospel  of God.     Then “every man’s conscience”  could be honestly glad  “in the sight  of God”  because they could see the proof  of God’s sacrificial love  in Christ Jesus.

That is the way we need to be today.     We need  to be looking for the truth  in God’s word  and sticking  to it.     A person’s  “conscience”  can get awfully burdened  with all the false doctrines  of false preachers.     Christ came  to set us free  from all our guilt,  shame,  and burdens of self-righteousness.     If that isn’t happening  in our lives,  then we’re probably mixed up  with some sort  of false doctrine.     We need  to find out  what sort  of falseness  we’ve been trapped by,  and let our LORD free us  with the truths  in His eternal word.     That means we must open up God’s word and learn from it.

Then,  as we commend ourselves  to God’s grace  through Christ,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  the love  and mercy  in Your salvation  are the greatest gift  anyone can receive.     Thank You.”

Love,
Margaret
