The River  of Your Delights

Rivers give us  an abundant supply  of water.     They are beautiful  and awesome  to view  as they give life  to the surrounding lands.     That is the picture  our LORD  wants us  to have  in mind  when Psalm 36:7-9 says,

How precious  is Your lovingkindness,  O God!
And the children of men  take refuge  in the shadow  of Your wings.
They drink  their fill  of the abundance  of Your house;
And You give them  to drink  of the river  of Your delights.
For with You  is the fountain  of life;
In Your light  we see light.

God’s house  is more than abundantly filled  with goodness  and “delights”.     Some people just imagine heaven  to have streets of gold  or them sitting  on fluffy clouds.     That is all that is  —  imagination.     We need  to consider  what might really be  in  “the river  of Your delights”,  so that we might gain  a better insight  to the wonders  of heaven  and our lives  on earth.

First,  we need to take a look  at what this world  is like.     It reeks  with sins  of every sort.     Think of all the cheating,  lying,  killing,  slandering,  sexual sins,  robberies,  rioting,  deceptions,  blasphemies,  greediness,  fighting,  fears,  death,  sickness,  mental problems,  and earthly devastations.     This list has no end.     With all this going on continuously,  we become wary  of every possible thing  that could go wrong  in our little lives.     We have  to constantly try  to protect our homes,  families,  country,  and human rights.     It’s an unending earthly struggle.

In the midst  of our struggles,  we  “take refuge  in the shadow  of Your wings”  and we  “drink  of the river  of Your delights.     We trust  in God’s almighty love  and care,  knowing that  just as  He has protected  His children  down through the ages,  He will protect us  and lead us to our heavenly home.     As we  “drink  of the river  of Your delights,  we study  and dwell  on God’s word  to us  in the Bible.

There is where  we see  God’s everlasting truths  —  and know  that they apply  to every single believer.     What do we see  in God’s word  that is a “river  of Your delights”?     Throughout many verses,  the Bible lists  grace,  love,  forgiveness,  patience,  peace,  goodness,  kindness,  truth,  beauty,  glory,  purity,  holiness,  eternal life,  and every imaginable good thing.           In the same breath,  there will be no anger,  bitterness,  wrath,  clamor,  slander,  malice,  arrogance,  provocations,  revenge,  hatefulness,  death,  sickness,  cheating,  lying,  or any other sort  of evil.

There is immeasurable relief  in God’s love  and goodness.     We have this refreshment  in this world  as we dwell  on God’s promises.     When we enter heaven,  it will all be fulfilled  to overflowing  for all eternity.     We enjoy God’s  “delights” now  as we dwell  in His words  of promise  and look forward  to our home  in heaven.

Resting  in God’s words,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for showing us  Your truths.”

Love,
Margaret
