They Invited  the People

In general,  we’re a friendly bunch  of people.     It’s just nice  to get an invitation  for a get-together  of interesting activities.      That might be how  the Israelites felt  when they got snookered  into activities  with the Moabites  that made the LORD  very angry  with them.     Numbers 25:1-3  tells us a bit  about it,

While Israel remained  at Shittim,  the people began  to play  the harlot  with the daughters  of Moab.     For they invited  the people  to the sacrifices  of their gods,  and the people ate  and bowed down  to their gods.     So Israel  joined themselves  to Baal  of Peor,  and the LORD  was angry against Israel.

This happened during Israel’s travels through the wilderness.     The Israelites felt it was nice  to be friendly  with the heathen Moabites.     They did not have a clue  that the Moabites  were purposely luring the Israelites  into activities  that would make the LORD reject them.     Then,  when the LORD would reject Israel,  the Moabites would be able  to conquer them.     In other words,  the Moabites knew  that the LORD  was blessing Israel  and that  if they made the LORD angry  with the Israelites,  He would stop blessing them.

So,  how does this apply  to us today?     Hebrews 13:8 says,

Jesus Christ  is the same yesterday  and today  and forever.

And,  1 Samuel 15:29 shows us,

The Glory  of Israel  will not lie  or change His mind;  for He is not a man  that He should change  His mind.

God Almighty is not  like a parent  who might give in  to a child’s whims  —  just because  that child is pouting,  begging,  and throwing a tantrum.     The LORD  is most holy,  pure,  just,  righteous,  and loving.     He does not ever want any  of His children  to fall victim  to a bunch  of lies  and falsehoods.     Because God wants  to protect us,  He always sticks  to the truth  of matters.     The eternal truth is   that no liar  will be allowed  in heaven,  —  Revelation 22:15,

Outside  are the dogs  and the sorcerers  and the immoral persons  and the murderers  and the idolaters,  and everyone  who loves  and practices lying.

Honoring the  “gods”  or  “rulers”  of any sort  of falseness  is honoring a lie.     Whether we want  to admit it  or not,  honoring the practices  of Halloween  is honoring  all the idolatry  that is the basis  for all the Halloween traditions  regarding death,  ghosts,  witches,  evil spirits,  and the like.     None  of these things honor  or glorify the truths  of the LORD,  our Savior.

Actually,  Halloween traditions  are denying God’s saving love  and authority  by making out  like they rule  all life  on earth  —  and have more power  than the LORD.     The traditions  of Halloween  are lies  that we should not get suckered into  just because  someone is friendly  and has invited us  to Halloween activities.

Let us honestly  and totally honor  and glorify  the one-and-only true God,  and say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  thank You  for saving us  from eternal condemnation  through faith  in the love  of Christ Jesus,  our Savior.”

Love,
Margaret
