You Know  That Our Prosperity  Depends  Upon This Business

We know  how important  our economy is.     If nobody cares  to buy a certain product,  that business  will soon die.     We can list tons  of businesses  that have died off  over the years.     Their products  are no longer needed  or desirable.     Much better products  have been invented  and developed.     There is no longer a desire  for the old time records  with the record players  that needed  to be cranked up  by hand.     We now have DVDs  with better sound,  size,  and convenience.

This was the problem  of Demetrius,  the silversmith,  “who made silver shrines  of Artemis”  for the people  to worship.     (Acts 19:22-41)     Christianity was spreading fast.     People were coming  to faith  in Christ Jesus  as their Savior  from sin.     When one honestly trusts  in Jesus,  there is no need  or even the slightest desire  for a silly man-made idol.

Demetrius gathered  other idol craftsmen  and said  in Acts 19:25,

“You know  that our prosperity depends  upon this business.”

According to Demetrius,  the apostle Paul  was the instigator  of his problem.     After all,  Paul was preaching   “that gods made  with hands  are no gods at all.”     (Acts 19:26)     Demetrius also loved his reputation  (Don’t we all?),  and did not want  to feel ashamed,  so he added  in Acts 19:27,

Not only is there danger  that this trade  of ours fall  into disrepute,  but also  that the temple  of the great goddess Artemis  be regarded  as worthless  and that she whom all  of Asia  and the world worship  will even be dethroned  from her magnificence.

That possibility  filled the idol worshipers  with rage.     They didn’t want  to be in  “disrepute”  or have their goddess  “regarded as worthless”.     So,  a whole crowd was gathered,  and “the majority did not know  for what reason  they had come together.”     (Acts 19:32)     That’s how riots begin.     There is no understanding  —  just confusion  and hot tempers  over all sorts  of misinformation.

The town clerk  finally quieted the people  and dismissed the crowd,  warning them  that all such matters should  “be settled  in the lawful assembly.”     (Acts 19:39)

All this happened because  —  “You know  that our prosperity  depends  upon this business.”     Money is the name  of the underlying game.     This is exactly the way  it is  with Halloween.     It stems  from heathen superstitions  —  but businesses love it  because  “You know  that our prosperity depends  upon this business.”

In actuality,  if Christ Jesus  is honestly  believed in  and totally trusted  to be our honest-to-goodness Savior  because He definitely  is the fulfillment  of all the Old Testament prophecies  regarding our Savior,  we should all  be causing Halloween  to  “fall  into disrepute”.     It really should be “regarded  as worthless”  by every single Christian.

Looking  at the truths  behind every celebrated,  worldly tradition  —  and looking  at the truths  of Jesus  being the fulfillment  of all God’s prophecies regarding our Savior  —  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord God,  our Savior,  Your salvation  is worth much more  than all the gold  and silver  in the whole world.”

Love,
Margaret
