If Then  You Cannot Do  Even a Very Little Thing

The sparrows love  to sing  on the fence  near my kitchen window.     So,  as I do dishes  or prepare a meal,  I enjoy having them serenade  and watch me.     They are so dependent  on God  for all their needs.     With their necessity  to be dependent  upon the Lord,  they just take one day  at a time  and let their blessings  come from God.

They aren’t able  to cultivate the ground  for a crop  of seeds.     They aren’t able  to build storage barns  for their winter food supply.     They simply take one day  at a time  with a trust  in God’s provision.     How very unlike us.     And so,  we listen  to Jesus  as He teaches us  in Luke 12:22-26,

Do not be anxious  for your life,  as to what you shall eat;  nor for your body,  as to what you shall put on.     For life  is more than food,  and the body than clothing.

Consider the ravens,  for they neither sow  nor reap;  and they have no storeroom  nor barn;  and yet God feeds them;  how much more valuable  you are  than the birds!

And which  of you  by being anxious  can add a single cubit  to his life’s span?     If then  you cannot do  even a very little thing,  why are you anxious  about other matters?

There is so much  we cannot do.     We are not able  to give ourselves life —  we did not  create ourselves.     We cannot give ourselves  a special talent  in music,  math,  mechanics,  or whatever.     We have  to work  with the talents  and blessings God  has given us.

Let us humbly consider  all the things  we cannot do.     And then,  realize  that God does all that  and so much more.     He alone  is the Almighty  —  not any  of us.     All of nature  is a creation  of God  according to  all His wisdom  and love.     We see  how He has tenderly cared  for everything.     In the depths  of His care  for us,  Jesus suffered  and died,  so that our sins  could be paid for  in full  by faith  in His atoning blood.

God wants us  to learn  to trust Him  —  God expects us  to get a grip  on the reality  of our human situation  and humbly trust Him.     Faith,  hope,  and love  will help us  to rest  in our heavenly Father’s arms.

In the peace  of acknowledging  God’s loving care  and discipline,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  in Your care,  we are free  to sing  —  just like the sparrows.”

Love,
Margaret
